Thunder Bay Celebrates with Colourful Birthday Party

June 26, 2008 – Recreation & Culture Division staff shared details today about Canada Day activities scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, July 1 at Marina Park. The celebrations begin at 6 pm with entertainment and activities for people of all ages. With attendance estimates of over 20,000, this event remains Thunder Bay's largest annual single day event.

The annual Canada Day Parade begins at 6 pm at the Moose Hall (434 Fort William Road). The twenty entries participating will move along Water Street, ending at Marina Park's Downtown Heart of the Harbour stage as part of the Canada Day opening ceremonies.

"We encourage everyone to proudly show their Canadian pride by wearing red and white to Marina Park on Canada Day," says Cindy Orr, Canada Day Coordinator. "The main field will be a sea of red and white as two-hundred Tai Chi students will perform with Canadian fan flags. There will be something for everyone to enjoy and residents and tourists alike can relax in the paddle boat lounge or sample foods from a variety of vendors on-site."

Three stages will feature a full line-up of performers from 6 pm to 11 pm.  The top-notch local talent selected to be part of the Canada Day festivities is guaranteed to set toes tapping and get dancers dancing.
The 'Celebration Station' area will include activities by Playground Staff.  Join in the fun with Satu's Belly Dancers and Arabella's Eqyptian Dancers.  Bring your own drum, cowbell or spoons and keep the beat in the Open Community Drum Circle with Sean Jesseau.  In the 'Youth Zone' area, play a variety of Giant games. The Heart of Canada 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, presented by Subway, will take place with games beginning at 9:30 am with the finals scheduled for 7 pm.

Canada Day's grand finale will be a sensational fireworks display scheduled to begin at 11 pm.

Admission to the Canada Day celebrations at Marina Park is free. No parking is allowed in the park on July 1.  Free parking is available at the Heart of the Harbour Parkade (18 N. Court St.) and there will be free shuttle buses running from the Community Auditorium, Intercity Shopping Centre and the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre. Shuttles will run from 4:30 pm through 12:30 am.  No personal fireworks or alcohol will be allowed on the grounds during Canada Day.
