Web Exhibit Highlights Past Firefighting in Lakehead

October 15, 2009 - A new virtual exhibit from City Archives on the history of Fire Services in Thunder Bay is now available on the City’s website. The exhibit details the history of the Fire Departments of Port Arthur and Fort William from the 1890s until 1970.

Topics include fire prevention programs, cooperation between fire departments, stations and equipment, and the changing duties of firefighters over the years.

“The Archives contains a wide range of material such as photographs and artifacts, as well as official documents and newspaper clippings,” said Matt Szybalski, City Archivist. “This exhibit brings together a variety of sources to tell the story of this important municipal service.”

The exhibit can be viewed at www.thunderbay.ca/archives.
