Custom Fence

A new fence is being installed from Red River Road to the Howe Street Overpass, replacing a chain-link fence. The design of the fence is based on an interpretation of the 3-dimensional form of sound waves. As one moves past the fence it appears to shift and move – at the same time it allows for clear views through to the Park and Lake Superior. The colour selection for the fence replicates the tone of the bark of nearby coniferous trees, which are interspersed on either side of the fence.

The soundwave fence is an example of the design approach for Prince Arthur’s Landing whereby all site elements – even seemingly mundane objects – can embody features that interpret the unique character of the Thunder Bay waterfront and its activities.

Fabrication and installation is being done by local Thunder Bay firm Mekena Project Management Group.
