Deer Management

The City of Thunder Bay has implemented a deer management strategy to deal with the overpopulation of deer and address problems and health risks resulting from the increased number of deer within city limits.

The City of Thunder Bay passed two bylaws to govern the deer management strategy:
  • 046-2012 – A bylaw to permit the hunting of deer by means of bow and arrow in certain areas of the City of Thunder Bay
  • 021-2012 – A  By-law to prohibit the feeding of deer within the City of Thunder Bay

Controlled Deer Hunt FOr city of thunder bay

A controlled deer hunt by bow and arrow will be permitted on private properties in rural areas within the City of Thunder Bay this fall. 

Deer Bow Hunt Season (City of Thunder Bay) – September 1 to December 15, 2012

Bow hunters will require the written permission of private property owners in designated rural or semi-rural area within city limits to hunt deer from September 1 to December 15. Hunters taking part in the controlled bow hunt must abide by the provincial hunting regulations for archery equipment including the possession of a valid outdoors card and proper tags to hunt deer.

Photo of Information Session at Confederation CollegeCity of Thunder Bay Licensing & Enforcement, Thunder Bay Police and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources are involved in the administration and enforcement of the rules and regulations for the controlled bow hunt.

A public information session was held on Thursday August 23 at Confederation College to answer public concerns about the controlled hunt. Close to 90 people turned out to the evening session to ask questions related to public safety and the safety for bow hunters involved.
