Grand Opening of the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility

In Sept. 2009, the City of Thunder Bay proudly celebrated the official Grand Opening of its new state-of-the-art Solid Waste & Recycling Facility on Mapleward Road. The $11-million facility is designed to optimize the management of solid waste and emphasize waste diversion and recycling.

‘Green’ components of the new site were developed using the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design principles. Features such as solar wall cladding, energy efficient equipment and water conserving plumbing were used to reduce environmental impact. The City is also working with Thunder Bay Hydro Renewable Power to build a power generating station and heat recovery system that uses methane gas from the landfill. The project will annually harness the power of 263 million cubic feet of methane gas, produced from decaying organic material, that would otherwise be released into the environment.
