Thunder Bay’s Anchor Tenant in Patient-Centred Research

Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute LogoThe Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute is Canada’s newest molecular imaging and advanced diagnostics research institute. It is an independent, not-for-profit research corporation that partners closely with Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre to bring world-class patient care and translational research to Northwestern Ontario.

All research done at the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute is driven by patient needs. This patient-centred research focus is unique, and will transform patient care in our community and eventually, internationally. Cancer is one of the leading health concerns in the region and will be the initial focus. The research will be conducted under three themes that will help scientists and clinicians detect and treat cancer and other diseases at the earliest possible stage.

The first full fiscal year of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute has been tremendously successful. In a short 16 months, the scientific and corporate talent, partnerships, infrastructure and equipment to support leading-edge research has been put in place. Over $50 million in funding support has been received from the Government of Ontario, the Government of Canada, the City of Thunder Bay and Philips Healthcare. The Pre-Clinical Research facilities at ICR Discoveries at 290 Munroe Street, and Translational Research space at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre have officially opened. Concurrently, the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute is working with local, regional, provincial, federal and industry partners to build health research and commercialization capacity in Northwestern Ontario.

“As partners, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute share a common goal: developing a world class Academic Health Sciences Centre and Research Institute, which ultimately results in providing the best patient-centred care,” said Keith Jobbitt, Board Chair, Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute.

The Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute is an investment in economic growth and the quality of life in Northwestern Ontario. The research enterprise is invaluable for preparing the region to compete in the global research arena and providing improved patient care. In Thunder Bay, we are truly bringing discovery to life!
