PRO Kids is dedicated to making recreation activities accessible to economically disadvantaged children and youth. To see if your child meets the criteria for assistance, read on:

Who can apply?

  • Children and youth up to 18 years of age who are from low-income families and unable to afford the registration fees. These applicants cannot be participating in another registered paid program. One program per child, per season.

It's easy to apply

  • Choose a community-based program of interest to the child/youth. Look in The Key (Thunder Bay's Guide to Community programs), other publications or on our Partners List page to see activities that are available each season.
  • Identify the activity and the organization providing this activity (e.g., Hockey, Grandview Recreational Hockey Association).

Parents: Frequently Asked Questions

  • What programs are available through PRO Kids?
    Find out what your child is interested in. If needed, contact the PRO Kids Coordinator for guidance about activities that are a good match for your child's age, interests, schedule and proximity to your home. Check out our Partners List for a comprehensive look at the programs currently available.
  • How do I know if my child(ren) qualifies?
    If your child is not active and the circumstances are due to extenuating financial difficulties, submit the application form. Applicants must include the name of a reference who can verify financial need. If you are unsure of your eligibility call the PRO Kids Coordinator at (807) 625-3212. First-time applicants must follow up with the PRO Kids Coordinator once the application is submitted.
  • Who can be a reference?
    A reference is someone who can confirm the personal and financial situations as they relate to the child (e.g., social worker, clergy, group leader, teacher, etc.)
  • When can I apply?
    PRO Kids accepts applications on a seasonal basis, one season before the start-up of a program. Distribution of The Key provides a good marker. For example, when the Summer issue of The Key arrives at your home, you can apply for fall programs. Placement is based on the registration guidelines of the activity and the availability of spaces.
  • Will everyone know that my child participates through PRO Kids?
    The PRO Kids Coordinator, the organizer of the activity, and possibly the coach or leader will know. We ask that the information be kept confidential so your child can participate as any other child would.
  • Does PRO Kids pay for equipment?
    Families should try to purchase the necessary equipment on their own. If one or two pieces are unmanageable, a family member can discuss specific needs directly with the PRO Kids Coordinator.



  • Parent/guardian or youth completes PRO Kids application form and sends it in.
  • Application is received by PRO Kids and dated.
  • Placement of accepted applicants is made on a first-come, first-served basis per program.
  • Reference check is completed. (This is done once time a year.)
  • Referral is sent to activity provider, listing the names of those placed.
  • Letter of confirmation is sent to family.
  • Parent/guardian or youth can follow up with PRO Kids at any time to check the status of the application.
  • Youth 14 and over may apply on their own behalf..

Guidelines for Applicants

  • PRO Kids allows children to enrol in one activity each season, provided the child is not participating in any other paid program at the same time. PRO Kids provides activities for children who are unable to participate otherwise. It is not intended to supplement participation in more than one activity at a time.
  • The parent/guardian or youth is responsible for registering directly with the identified partner organization once PRO Kids has placed the child.
  • The parent/guardian or youth is responsible for ensuring attendance. If transportation or equipment is an issue, contact PRO Kids for assistance.
  • There is a waiting lists for programs. If for some reason the child or youth can no longer participate, the activity provider and the PRO Kids coordinator must be notified so that another child can fill the space.
  • If the parent/guardian or youth encounters any problems with the program, they are responsible for contacting PRO. Kids. The Coordinator will try to resolve it.
