seniors The City operates three Homes for the Aged: Grandview Lodge, Dawson Court and Pioneer Ridge. These Homes offer Thunder Bay's citizens 24-hour nursing care, physiotherapy, security, laundry, nourishing meals and snacks, Resident Counsellor support, enrichment opportunities, recreational and restorative care activities, religious services and fellowship. Active auxiliaries and volunteers in all Homes participate in special programs which enhance the residents' lives. The City also operates a Support Program at Jasper Place for seniors able to live independently in an apartment with some assistance. Admission to all long-term care homes including the City Homes is handled centrally by the local Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) and can be accessed by phoning 345-7339. Applications for Jasper Support Program is managed by Thunder Bay District Housing, 114 S. May Street or by phone at 623-4600.

Recreation & Culture Division

The City's Recreation & Culture Division operates two Older Adult Centres for persons 55 and over, Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre on the North side and Herb Carrol 55 Plus Centre on the South side.  Both Centres offer recreational, educational and volunteer opportunities along with a number of valuable services.  Registered programs include: Visual Arts, Fitness, Tai Chi, craft workshops, computer lessons and much more.

In addition, daily activities such as cards, billiards, shuffleboard, dances etc. are scheduled throughout the week.  Weekly information sessions, monthly tea time, movie afternoons and special events are also a part of the regular activities.  Among the services offered at both Centres are Income Tax assistance, foot care clinics, diabetes health counselling, and flu clinics in addition to health related information sessions.  The Support Services area located in the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre also co-ordinates the Friendly Visiting, Telephone Assurance and Walk-A-Bit program to Older Adults in the Community.

The Thunder Bay Fifty-Five Plus Centre's Cafe offers reasonably priced, hot, nutritious homemade meals as well as soup, salads, sandwiches and desserts daily Monday to Friday.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels provides nourishing meals at a reasonable price in order to help people remain in or return to their own homes, thus maintaining their independence in the community. Any individual who lives in Thunder Bay is eligible if s/he is unable to prepare meals on a daily basis and has no one else in the household who can do so. Meals are delivered weekdays Monday to Friday between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. The cost is reasonable and a subsidy is available for eligible clients.
