Sewage Treatment & Water Pollution Control Plant

The City of Thunder Bay owns and operates a new state-of-the-art Secondary Sewage Treatment Plant located on Atlantic Avenue. It was constructed to upgrade the water pollution control plant, one of the main components of the Pollution Prevention and Control Plan adopted by the City in 1999. In addition to secondary sewage treatment, the new facility includes nitrification to eliminate ammonia from the wastewater. The new process provides secondary treatment, phosphorous removal, sludge digestion, and dewatering for the City's wastewater. The opening of the new facility launches a new era in the protection of Lake Superior.
