A Wealth of Culture and Heritage
Thunder Bay is a city rich in history, architecture and cultural heritage. Historically, the City is perhaps best known for Fort William, the hub of the Canadian Fur Trade, established by the Northwest Company in 1803. The modern City of Thunder Bay is actually the amalgamation of the former cities of Port Arthur and Fort William in 1970.
Today, Thunder Bay is one of the most dynamic "Cultural Capitals of Canada". This distinction is awarded by the Government of Canada to recognize and support Canadian municipalities for special activities that harness the many benefits of arts and culture in community life.
Thunder Bay is proud of the ethnic diversity and rich multicultural history of our City. A city with deeply rooted European and Aboriginal cultures, Thunder Bay is the sixth most culturally diverse community of its size in North America.
The vitality of Thunder Bay's arts and heritage community is celebrated through a variety of performances, programs, exhibitions, festivals and events year-round. From provincial and national sporting championships, to the Blues Festival, National Aboriginal Day and Festa Italiana, Thunder Bay loves to celebrate the best of music, culture and sport.
The City of Thunder Bay supports cultural excellence through funding programs, education and communication, building partnerships, providing leadership, and policy development and research.
