Cultural Mapping

The City of Thunder Bay has a rich history and heritage and is home to a wide variety of cultural facilities, organizations, businesses, events, works of art, heritage buildings and sites, and individual artists. These assets are a vital part of civic pride and identity and need to be celebrated, preserved and developed.

From our long-standing museums and galleries, professional theatre company, and internationally renowned symphony orchestra, to our skilled local musicians, individual artists and grassroots cultural groups, it is important for the City and Citizens of Thunder Bay to be aware of and understand the scope and value of our cultural sector.  With this knowledge as our starting point, we will have the tools we need to plan for and develop our cultural resources.Sledding on the Lake

Begun in 2008, the City of Thunder Bay is continuing to develop an inventory of all of the cultural assets in Thunder Bay, including:

  • cultural facilities
  • public art
  • individual artists
  • cultural businesses
  • cultural organizations
  • heritage buildings and sites and more

From this inventory, a map will be created, and both the inventory and map will be made available to the general public. These products will give citizens and visitors a clear and informative guide to culture in Thunder Bay.

Stay tuned for the official launch of the Cultural Mapping Project and your opportunity to help us map culture in Thunder Bay!

Cultural Mapping Committee (CMC)

The City has formed a Cultural Mapping Committee to provide advice, input and assistance to Cultural Services throughout the development of the municipal cultural inventory and cultural map.

The CMC provides a specialized resource for Cultural Services and represents a broad-based community profile, reflecting the diversity of residents and cultural activities that will be included the cultural mapping of Thunder Bay.
