Waste Water

photo of Water Pollution Control Plant BAF BuildingThe City of Thunder Bay is committed to protecting the integrity of Lake Superior. The City expanded and retrofitted the existing Atlantic Avenue Water Pollution Control Plant, creating a new state-of-the-art Secondary Sewage Treatment Plant. This upgrade was one of the main recommendations of the Pollution Prevention and Control Plan adopted by the City in 1999. The opening of the new facility launched a new era in the protection of Lake Superior.

In addition to secondary sewage treatment, the new facility uses nitrification to eliminate ammonia from the waste water. The new process provides secondary treatment, phosphorus removal, sludge digestion, and de-watering for the City's wastewater.
