Eye on the Street
The Eye on the Street Partnership is a community public safety initiative in the City of Thunder Bay. In November 2005, the City of Thunder Bay established a video surveillance program with 16 cameras in 12 locations in the Downtown areas (see maps below).
Partners in Public Safety
The partnership includes the City of Thunder Bay, Heart of the Harbour Downtown BIA, Simpson Street BIA, Victoria Avenue BIA and TBayTel. The partners developed the program through significant public consultation.
Designed to promote public safety, the objectives of the monitoring program include:

Fostering and maintaining a safe environment in the downtown core areas

Deterring unlawful and anti-social behaviour

Contributing to the revitalization of the downtown cores

Providing an additional source of information for police
Signs, as shown above, identify areas that will be within the view of the camera. Summarized below are the principles that govern this system:

Monitoring is solely for safety and security purposes -
Information gathered through video monitoring is used solely for security and law enforcement purposes and released in accordance with the standards of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act

Signs identify areas within the view of the camera

Camera views are restricted to public spaces only

The cameras are another source of information for Thunder Bay Police

Police continue their presence in monitored areas as they deem appropriate
