Victim Crisis Assistance and Referral Service Volunteers

Victim Crisis Assistance and Referral Services (VCARS) is a 24 hour, seven day a week service providing free, immediate, on-site assistance to victims of crime or tragedy.  VCARS is called on by police, emergency services, and directly to provide emotional support, practical assistance and community referrals to victims.  VCARS volunteers provide extraordinary support within the Thunder Bay community and surrounding area.  Over 40 volunteers log in over 30,000 volunteer hours a year.  The volunteers complete the thorough screening process and over 40 hours of initial training to become a certified VCARS volunteer.  The Direct Service and Dispatch Volunteers support victims and their families of assault, sudden death, domestic violence, robbery, homicide, sexual assault and elder abuse.  For seven years, on almost a daily basis, the VCARS volunteers have made themselves available to be called out at short notice to assist victims.  The VCARS volunteers have supported those within our community through their most difficult and vulnerable moments.  They truly are Citizens of Exceptional Achievement.
