Introduction

Welcome to the growing number of organizations that coordinate special events in Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario. Events, tournaments and festivals offer important social and economic benefits to both the community that they serve and the cause that they endorse. Special events also play an increasingly significant role in tourism development, locally and regionally.

This manual is designed to meet the needs of event planners in Thunder Bay, following the format found in The Event Managing and Marketing Institute Manual by David Wilkinson. Wilkinson’s manual is a comprehensive and generic examination of event management. Copies are available from the Recreation & Culture Division in the Victoriaville Civic Centre and Thunder Bay Public Library:

Waverley Resource Library
Brodie Street Library

Mary J.L. Black Library
County Park Library

Visit the Festivals & Events Ontario website for the latest best practices in the festivals and events industry.

Event coordination has much in common from event to event. One way to benefit is to share in others' knowledge, their experiences from past events as well as their resources. This manual offers a general introduction to event planning as well as some specific information about resources that are available in Thunder Bay.

Event organizers should be aware that some aspects of this comprehensive "To Do" list for organizing an event may not pertain to smaller events. Do not feel obligated to access all of the services and resources presented in this manual. A smaller-scale event may not require all of the resources presented here.

Good Luck!
