Cemeteries

The original meaning of “cemetery” is “a sleeping place”. Every town and city must, by necessity, provide such sleeping places, whether they are to be found in the quiet countryside or in the midst of the downtown hustle and bustle. Two of Thunder Bay’s Cemeteries are municipally-owned and operated by the City’s Parks Division.

Mountain View and St. Patrick’s Cemeteries are located side by side in the south end of Thunder Bay at the intersection of Highway 61 and Broadway Avenue. As well as traditional graves and cremation plots, a columbarium wall and carefully-landscaped grounds, the 58 acres of cemetery grounds include six military plots which exist as special areas established for people who have served in the Canadian military services. These well maintained grounds have been in operation since the late 1800's and offer visitors the opportunity to view unique and historic headstones as well as the beautiful views of the Kaminitiquia River and the Nor'Wester mountains.
