Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries

March 6, 2008 – The Thunder Fire Service is urging residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms when they change their clocks forward this weekend.

“When we change our clocks it’s a good time to ensure our smoke alarm batteries are fully charged by installing new ones,” says Fire Chief John Hay. “Only working smoke alarms can alert people to fire and give them precious seconds they need to safely escape. The law in Ontario is to have working smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas.”

Five people, including three young children died in a house fire this past weekend in Hamilton, Ontario. It has been confirmed by Office of the Fire Marshal investigators that there were no working smoke alarms found in the home.
