MacLean's Names City of Thunder Bay a Top 100 Employer

October 18, 2005 MacLean’s Magazine has selected the City of Thunder Bay as one of the Top 100 Employers in Canada.

Mayor Lynn Peterson made the announcement at Monday night’s Committee of the Whole Meeting of Council. The listing of the top 100 employers will appear in this week’s issue of MacLean’s, and is expected to be available on local news stands by Wednesday, Oct. 19.

“This is ultimately an opportunity to recognize the 3,000 employees of the City of Thunder Bay who work so hard everyday to serve the citizens of Thunder Bay,” said Mayor Peterson.

The MacLean’s Top 100 Employers list is based on research conducted by Mediacorp Canada Inc., a publisher specializing in employment-related issues. Rather than a ranking, the Top 100 Employers is a list of the organizations that are considered best in their class from more than 1,100 applicants that were received.

“I’d like to thank City Council and our municipal employees for their support in the implementation of wellness, health & safety, and other municipal policies and programs which have allowed us to receive such recognition,” said Robert Petrie, Chief Administrative Officer. “We have made huge leaps in our human resource policies and practices as this recognition confirms. Special thanks are due to our human resources division for their professional support and work in initiating many of our progressive programs and policies.”

This is the sixth year of the review, and the first time that the City of Thunder Bay has been named to the list. The philosophy of the top 100 list is: The best employers do more than issue paychecks - they improve life in the workplace and in the surrounding community as well.

“We are a top employer because we have top employees, “said Mayor Peterson. “On behalf of my colleagues on Council and the citizens of Thunder Bay, I’d like to thank our employees for making us a top employer.”
