22 year old Gary William Bert MATTINAS of Thunder Bay is facing charges of Trafficking and a Breach of Undertaking following his arrest at the Thunder Bay airport Monday night. MATTINAS was taken into custody by members of the Combined Forces Organized Crime Unit after arriving at the airport from a flight originating in Toronto.

MATTINAS was allegedly in possession of a quantity of Oxycodone and Percocet pills with a street value of approximately $10,000.

The Combined Forces Organized Crime Unit consists of members from The Thunder Bay Police Service, The O.P.P.- Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, The R.C.M.P., The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service and The Anishinabek Police Service.

Thunder Bay Police responded to a South Vickers Street apartment after a report that a male had attempted to enter the residence armed with a knife and threatened the female occupant. A neighbour who heard the commotion scared the would-be intruder away. The suspect is described as being 5’7” tall wearing a light coloured hoodie and a black toque.

Thunder Bay Police arrested a 26 year old man at 3:30 a.m. today in connection with a stabbing that occurred on Cumming Street on March 3, 2010. The male also had several warrants outstanding.

A 22 year old Thunder Bay man is in custody after police responded to a single motor vehicle accident at Fort William Road and the Harbour Expressway at 1:30 a.m. The male has been charged with Impaired Driving, Driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol and Public Mischief.

On the 26 February 2010 members of the Regional Integrated Gang Unit executed a search warrant on a south side residence. Seized was $40,000 in marijuana, several thousand dollars in cash, drug paraphernalia and an imitation handgun.

A male as been arrested and detained for Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking under the CDSA.

On the 26 February 2010 two females observe a male standing out front of the LCBO on Fort William Rd. This male was observed with a scarf pulled up over his nose and adjusting himself. This male then pulled out what appeared to be a handgun.

The female witnesses call 911. A male was located just west of the LCBO. An off duty officer went to assist the dispatched officer in the arrest, when he observed the accused pulled out what he recognized as a handgun. Both officers took the accused to the ground and the firearm was dislodged.

Seized was a BB gun that is a very close replica to a modern handgun.

A male is in custody for Carrying Concealed, Weapons Dangerous and 2 counts Resist Arrest. Possible more charges to follow.

A 32 year old male is in hospital after being attacked early this morning. The victim was walking on Brodie Street near Victoria Avenue when four males started chasing him. The victim got as far as the rear of City Hall when he was circled by the four suspects. The suspects broke a beer bottle on the victims head, beat and stabbed him. No one is in custody at the time of this media release.

Two Young Offenders are in custody after officers responded to McKellar Park School shortly after 7 a.m. An alert citizen phoned police and upon arrival officers observed the two fleeing the scene of a Break and Enter. A computer was recovered. The two will appear in court tomorrow.

Speeders

The focused enforcement aimed at speeders continues in Thunder Bay. This week, over 50 tickets have been issued. Officers have been following up on locations where excessive speed is believed to be problematic.

The Thunder Bay Police Service would like to once again advise area motorists that speed remains a major concern in the overall goal of making our roadways safe.

The Thunder Bay Police Service is continuing an investigation into a robbery of a 16 year old male which occurred this past Saturday morning. The teen was walking along Victoria Avenue near Brodie Street at 9:15 a.m. when three men approached him. The males grabbed the teen and robbed the victim of a small amount of cash and some personal items. The males were last seen heading south on Brodie Street from Victoria Avenue. The 16 year old did not require medical attention.

Detailed descriptions of the three suspects:

Suspect 1:

  • Native Canadian male approximately 50 years of age
  • 5’7” tall – heavy build
  • Long grey hair in a waist length braid
  • Wearing a plaid bush jacket

Suspect 2:

  • Native Canadian male approximately 45 years of age
  • Chubby face
  • Brown shoulder length hair
  • Wearing a tan Carhardt jacket

Suspect 3:

  • Native Canadian male approximately 45 years of age
  • Heavy build
  • Wearing a yellow toque and beige jacket

Police are following up on possible suspects. Anyone with information as to the identity of these men is asked to contact Police or Crime Stoppers.

Speeding Still An Issue

A focused effort over the past two weeks has netted over 180 speeding charges involving local motorists.

Police find that the improved road and weather conditions begin to build a level of false confidence in driving habits for some motorists. Speed is a factor in road safety. The Thunder Bay Police Service will conduct periodic enforcement projects aimed at improving the safety for both motorists and pedestrians throughout the city.

The message is simple. Slow down and be safe when your drive.

The investigation into the serious injury of a 3 year old girl continues. The girl has been transferred to a hospital in Winnipeg for further treatment. Her parents have accompanied her. The girl’s condition is still described as serious.

A 20 year old Toronto man is facing charges following an investigation in Thunder Bay. T.B.PS. Community Response Team members assisted the Combined Forces Organized Crime Unit on Tuesday in taking the male into custody.

The male was arrested at Syndicate Avenue and Walsh Street Tuesday night just before 6:00 p.m. after officers made a vehicle stop. A subsequent search of the individual and his motel room in the city’s north side resulted in the seizure of crack cocaine valued at approximately $18,000.00 along with approximately $5,000.00 in cash.

20 year old Collin Anthony TAYLOR is in custody facing charges of Trafficking and Breach of Probation.

The Combined Forces Organized Crime Unit consists of members from The Thunder Bay Police Service, The O.P.P.- Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, The R.C.M.P., The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service and The Anishinabek Police Service.

The Thunder Bay Police Service Criminal Investigations Branch continues the investigation into the circumstances surrounding an injured three year old girl. The child is being treated at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for a very serious head injury.

The child was transported by air ambulance to hospital just after 4:00 p.m. yesterday from her family’s home on Candy Mountain Road in Oliver Paipoonge. Emergency medical staff at the T.B.R.H.S.C. notified police that the child’s injuries appeared to be suspicious in nature.

Investigators are examining the family home on Candy Mountain Road and conducting further follow up into the events surrounding the child’s injuries. The three year old is in serious condition.

A three year old girl was admitted to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre just before 5:00 p.m. today with serious injuries. Police were notified by medical staff at the hospital regarding the nature of the child’s injuries.

The girl is in critical condition. The nature and circumstances of her injuries are suspicious. The Criminal Investigations Branch is conducting an investigation. An update on this incident is expected on Wednesday.

Thunder Bay Police arrested a male suspect in connection with an armed robbery that occurred on January 10, 2010. In that incidents male was pepper sprayed and relieved of cash. The suspect will appear before a Justice this morning charged with Armed Robbery and Breach of Undertaking.

Police responded to a south side residence in regards to a domestic dispute. Police took a Thunder Bay man into custody after it was learned that he was choking his spouse. He will also appear in court this morning.

A Thunder Bay man was charged with Break and Enter and assault in relation to another domestic situation. The man unlawfully entered a north side home and assaulted his former girlfriend. The male is also charged with breaching a court order to stay away from the victim.

A 33 year old female was taken into custody shortly after police were called to a south side residence. A female attacked her partner with a knife. She will appear in court this morning charged with Assault with a Weapon.

Five persons were arrested for Public Intoxication and eight others were arrested on outstanding warrants and breaches of court orders.

Thunder Bay Police located a male person at the corner of Algoma Street and John Street at approximately 1:30 a.m. The male had been beaten by two unknown males. The victim was taken to hospital suffering from facial injuries. Investigation into this assault continues.

Thunder Bay Police have an 18 year old male in custody after responding to a report of a stabbing on Violet Street. Police responded to a disturbance just before midnight and found a 26 year old male had been stabbed in the hand. The victim was taken to hospital where he is being treated. The accused will appear in court this morning charged with Assault With A Weapon.

At 1:20 a.m. police responded to a north side establishment and located a male that had been struck on the head with a beer bottle. Paramedics attended. No charges were laid in this incident due to an uncooperative victim.

11 persons were arrested for Public Intoxication and police arrested one Impaired Driver.

Break and Enter to Beer Store - 145 W. Gore St

At approx 6:41 am a passerby noticed that a van had been driven through the front windows of the Beer Store on W. Gore St. Investigation revealed that the van was stolen and no one was present at the scene.

Investigation is being followed - up by the Criminal Investigations Branch.

Thunder Bay Police Service Officers attended at a South side residence overnight and have arrested Emilio BISIGNANO who was wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant for Kidnapping and Aggravated Assault.

Mr. BISIGNANO is being held in custody and will be appearing in court on the 12 Feb 2010.
