Thunder Bay is located in the geographic centre of Canada with the border to the United States 45 minutes south making our city easily accessible to both countries by air and road.


 

Airlines

Thunder Bay is a major centre for air travel to Northern Ontario. Thunder Bay has a full service International Airport which can accommodate big commercial planes to small regional carriers. Thunder Bay is the third busiest airport in Ontario (behind Toronto and Ottawa) serving over a half million passengers annually. The Airport was the first in Canada to remove its airport improvement fee.

Thunder Bay's air service connects with direct flights to Winnipeg in the west and 16 flights per day to Toronto in the east. Thunder Bay is also a regional hub for Northern Ontario and Northwestern Ontario, with regional carriers flying direct to Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Dryden, Fort Frances, Kenora and Sioux Lookout.

If you are traveling as a group, Thunder Bay has several motor coach options for getting to and around the city.


 

Driving

The city is accessible by road from the east and west on the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy. 11-17) or from the U.S. in the south, by Hwy. 61 from Duluth and Minneapolis.

Trans-Canada Link - Driving to Thunder Bay by bus or car is easy as our highway system is a central connector to points: east, west and south. In addition, Thunder Bay is only a short 35 minute drive from the international border crossing at Pigeon River. The Trans Canada Highway runs through Thunder Bay connecting to Winnipeg in the West and Sault Ste. Marie in the east.

Connections to American Midwest - Highway 61 takes you 45 minutes south to the Pigeon River Border Crossing with connections to the American Midwest through Duluth, Minnesota. From Duluth, Interstate Highways are direct links to major centres in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Chicago all within a day's drive of Thunder Bay.
