Tourism Thunder Bay Visitor Centres return to winter hours

Tourism Thunder Bay invites you to visit one of our 2 local information centres for information on new things to see and do.  The Pagoda Information Centre will remain open until September 12th, from 10am to 6pm, Tuesday thru Saturday.  The Terry Fox Information Centre will remain open daily from 8:30am to 7:30pm until September 8th, and then returning to their winter hours of 9:00am to 5:00pm, daily.  For more information visit or call (807) 983-2041.

Celebrate September with the Terry Fox foundation events

Join millions of people around the world in the search for a cure to Cancer.  Whether it be as an individual, group, workplace, business, or school join in for one of the following events to help raise money in the name of Terry Fox for cancer research. 

On September 11th, businesses are invited to take part in this year's annual Terry Fox Work Day. Take time while raising money for cancer research.  Ideas for events such as the Great Canadian Head Shave can be found on the Terry Fox Foundation Website.

On September 13th at 10am, the Terry Fox Foundation invites you to lace up your shoes, grab your family and friends, and come on down to St Ignatius High School for this year's annual Terry Fox Run.  Help raise money for cancer research, and keep Terry's memory and legacy alive.  For a pre-registration and pledge form visit the Terry Fox Foundation website.

On September 25th, Schools are invited to take part in this year's annual Terry Fox National School Run Day.

Fall Exploration at Fort William historical park

Summer may be over and many voyageurs have departed the rendezvous, but the doors of Fort William Historical Park remain open for fascinating explorations in the Canadian fur trade.

Embark upon an intimate tour of Fort William, grand inland headquarters of the North West Company in 1815.  You will be amazed at the size and scope of the Fort, a unique cultural mosaic of Scots, French Canadians and First Nations peoples.  Explore the Native Encampment, Great Hall, and artisans' square.  You may run across a sheep or two grazing from out working farm.

Tours depart every hour.  The Fort is open from 10am to 5pm daily, EDT.  Admission rates can be found at, under Visit Us.  Take Advantage of our Community Days offer of reduced admission, just $5.00, every Sunday, throughout September and early October.

  • September 13 from 1-4pm at Hazelwood Lake Nature Centre - Hazelwood Harvest Festival & craft Fair.  Craft and flea market tables, petting zoo, pony rides, live entertainment, take-your-own pumpkin carving, and concession.  Admission is $2/vehicle.

Between September 6-7th, the Hymers Agricultural Society invites you to come on down to Hymers on Highway 595 for their annual Hymers Fall Fair. This fun family event will include livestock shows, daily contests, an animal farm, craft demonstrations, a children's playground and much much more.  For more information visit

Between September 10th and 26th, Magnus Theatre invites you to come on down to their theatre and take in their production of Hank Williams: The Show He Never Gave by Maynard Collins.  The story of the man behind the legend!  This play with music presents the concert of Hank Williams never actually made it to on New Year's Eve in 1953.  It is the concert as it might have played out if Williams had not died in the back seat of his Cadillac on his way to the performance.  While relating his version of an entertainer's life and self-inflicted hard times.  Williams performs over a dozen of his hits including Your Cheatin' Heart, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, and I Saw The Light.  For more information visit, or call (807) 345-5552.

On September 12th, the City of Thunder Bay invites you come on down to the Kaministiqua River Heritage Park for this year's annual Riverfest '09.  Get reacquainted with the beauty, history and recreational opportunities the waterfront has to offer.  Activities include tours of the James Whalen Tugboat, the VIA Rail train, the Coast Guard Cutter, and the Glenada Tugboat.  There will also be a youth dock fishing derby and a BBQ cookoff!  For more information visit, or call (807) 625-2487.

On September 12th, the Victoria Avenue BIA invites you to come on down to the Victoria Avenue Shopping District for their Fort William Fall Street Festival.  This family-fun festival showcases street vendors including arts and crafts vendors, local business and organization displays, food vendors, demonstrations, a farmers and artisans market, live music and entertainment, clowns, actors and festival discounts will be offered at local stores as well as draws/prizes.  Thunder Bay Museum and Sports Hall of Fame will hold facility tours and much more,  For more information e-mail or call (807) 623-3355.

On September 25th, the Thunder Bay Rowing Club invites you to come on down to the Lakehead University Outpost for Bon Journey.  Come out and listen to the very best of Bon Jovi and Journey with such hits as Have a Nice day, Keep The Faith, Livin' on a Prayer, Separate Ways, Don't stop Believing and many more great hits.  Tickets are available at Corans Music Center for a cost of $10 in advance or $15 at the door, and you must be 19 years of age or older to attend.

On September 26th, Gammondale Farm kicks off its 14th Annual Pumpkinfest.  Pumpkinfest runs from 11am to 5pm, every Saturday and Sunday and Thanksgiving Monday until Halloween and will end on November 1st with Pumpkin Smashing Day.  There is fun for the whole family including Tractor pulled wagon rides to the mazes with prizes, Farm animals, tire swing, trike trails, Kids Corny Maze, Boo Barn, Pumpkin sling Shots, Pumpkin Catapult, Black Tire'd Horses, Corn Stalk Horses, Rubber Ducky Race, Pony and Draft horse Rides, much more.  You can also visit the Pumpkin Bakery in the Gammondale Homestead for pumpkin and apple pies, cookies, cupcakes, and chocolate candies.  Lots of great food and drinks too.  Especially the Caramel Apple Sundaes!  Gammondale is also open weekdays and evenings by reservation for birthday parties, school tours, community and corporate events.  For more information on this event and upcoming events visit  For reservations e-mail or call (807) 475-9609.

  • September 25-November 15 - The Limnology Project: An Exploration of our region.   Featuring Leslie Shaw, Luke Nicol, and Klaus Rossler, three solo shows by artists of the Lake Superior Region in their study of physical, chemical, meteorological and biological conditions of bodies of fresh water, and by extension ... it can also be constructed as the emotional and aesthetic response to the same conditions.
  • October 16 - The Harvest Moon Auction.  Featuring a live art auction, silent auction, hors d'houvres and desserts and live music.

The Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is located at 219 May Street South (beside City Hall in downtown Thunder Bay South) features a sports museum of artifacts and photographs and a hall of fame highlighting the achievements of the region’s athletes, builders and teams from a variety of different sports and eras.   • September 12th at 8pm, Jean-Paul De Roover - "Windows and Doors" Cd/CVC Release/Art Show.  Featuring musical performances by Jena-Paul Deroover with Gaelin Brown and The Sparrows.  A unique multi-disciplinary experience and a fusion of art forms comprised of music/film/original artwork! A cost of $5 at the door for this one night event only.
  • September 18th at 7pm, Gala Opening Reception for "Neopriest".  An exhibit featuring 14 International Contemporary Artists with Artist and Director talk, live musical performances & Refreshments.  The exhibit runs until October 17th.
  • September 18th at 7pm, Gala Opening Reception for "Meghan Niitynen - "Rockstar Portraits".  A drawing exhibit with live musical performances & refreshments.  The exhibit runs until October 17th.
