Thunder Bay has excellent primary and secondary educational opportunities with over 60 schools that include French immersion programs, comprehensive special education services, an International Baccalaureate Programme and an Outdoor Education Centre. The City is also served by a Christian private school and a French school governed by its own board.

The main school boards serving the Thunder Bay area are the Lakehead District School Board, the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, and the Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales.

The Lakehead District School Board
The Lakehead District School Board is the largest, with 22 elementary schools, four secondary schools and a centre for adult studies.
The Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board
The Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board is the second largest with 16 elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools.
The Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales
The Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales operates one elementary and one high school in Thunder Bay, and an additional six schools throughout the Thunder Bay District.
Confederation College
Confederation College has highly qualified faculty and caring staff to prepare graduates with the knowledge, skills and hands-on experience for their future careers. With over 70 programs, outstanding personal and academic support services, financial aid, distance education, e-learning, independent study and seven campuses across northwestern Ontario, the learning opportunities are endless. After graduation, 90% of students find work within six months. Or, some graduates choose to enroll with advanced standing in colleges and universities across Canada and around the world.
Lakehead University
Lakehead University is one of Canada's more exciting comprehensive universities with enrolments of under 10,000. Known for its strong leadership and commitment to student needs, Lakehead has a reputation for innovative programs and cutting-edge research. Recent research indicates that Lakehead graduates have an employment rate of 96% two years after graduation. In 2006, Lakehead University was named Canada's Research University of the Year in the undergraduate category by Research Infosource Inc. Its world-renowned Paleo-DNA Laboratory is the only Canadian university laboratory accredited for forensic DNA testing.
Northern Ontario School of Medicine
The Northern Ontario School of Medicine is a pioneering faculty of medicine, is hosted by Lakehead University in Thunder Bay and Laurentian University in Sudbury with multiple teaching and research sites distributed across Northern Ontario.
Lakehead University’s Faculty of Law
Lakehead University’s Faculty of Law, is in the North for the North. Its focus is on preparing students for the practice of law in rural and smaller centres. The law school focus is threefold. First, there is emphasis on aboriginal law and understanding of aboriginal issues. The law school provides stand-alone courses on aboriginal law, as well as integrating aboriginal perspectives into other subject areas where appropriate. The second focus is on the needs of small practitioners, which include a course concerned with the business of law. Third, there is concentration on natural resources law from mining rights to employment standards.
