Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) is a world-class acute healthcare facility. With patients and families at the centre of everything, TBRHSC serves all of Northwestern Ontario - with over 250,000 people, scattered over an area the size of France.

Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute (TBRHRI)

Northwestern Ontario is a unique living lab with a poorer health status than the rest of the province. This massive catchment area - a region the size of France - is home to a single, tertiary healthcare provider. Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC), together with its research arm the Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute (TBRHRI) and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), are advancing care for the residents of Northwestern Ontario.  Through research, innovation and partnership TBRHRI plans to change health status disparity and positively impact the economy of our region in the process.

St. Joseph's Care Group's broad program areas are: Complex Care & Physical Rehabilitation Services, Mental Health & Addiction Services, and Long-Term Care Services.

Innovative Education and Research for a Healthier North

Regional Cancer Care

Thunder Bay's cancer care is world class. They continue to lead Ontario in cancer treatment, diagnostics, and surgical wait times, and are rated highly in Canada for overall patient satisfaction. Their cancer care services span the northern region with prevention, screening, diagnostics, education, in-patient and out-patient treatment, surgical treatment, and supportive and palliative care.

Thunder Bay has gained international recognition in the rapidly growing biotechnology sector and has established relationships with experts in fields that will aid in the development of Biomarker Discovery Platform, the multi-application molecular screening technology for the identification of cancer biomarkers.

Lakehead University Paleo-DNA Laboratory

The Lakehead University Paleo-DNA Laboratory, established in 1996, is a research laboratory affiliated with the Lakehead University Centre for Analytical Services (LUCAS). The laboratory provides three functions: research, services and teaching. The research covers many aspects of DNA analysis; from the development and implementation of new extraction and purification methods through to their application. Research projects have involved modern and ancient human identification, species identification, and plant and animal genetics.

The Paleo-DNA Laboratory is a leader in mitochondrial DNA research, continually improving methodology, sensitivity and detection methods for DNA examination. Services include archaeological testing, paternity and relationship testing, human and species identification on a variety of sample types. As a University affiliated facility, the main objective is education. Courses and training programs are available to anyone who wants to learn more about the DNA process.
