Are you on the Voters List?

The Voters List is the register of electors used to provide important information about the election to eligible voters and to ensure only eligible voters are able to cast their ballot. Elections Ontario manages a single register of electors for both provincial and municipal elections in Ontario.

Your information on the Voters List may need to be added, changed or deleted. This can be done during the revision period which will take place starting September 1 through to the close of polls on Election Day. More information on where to check and how to update your information will be shared.

Are you 16 or 17 years old and interested in voting? If you are 16 or 17 years old, a Canadian citizen, and a resident of Ontario, you can add your name to the Register of Future Voters.

Ensure your School Support Designation is up-to-date before the next election

While Elections Ontario maintains the Permanent Register of Electors in Ontario for provincial, municipal, and school board elections, MPAC (Municipal Property Assessment Corporation) is legislatively responsible for collecting school support designation information.

What is school support?

Whether you own or rent your home, your property is linked to a school board – even if you don’t have children or your children aren’t currently attending school. While you’re not required to make a designation, you do have the option to choose which school board you support. If you don’t make a choice, your support will default to the English-Public school board.

How to update school support designations

You can still update your designation after June 1 using MPAC AboutMyProperty™ or MPAC’s online portal for tenants. Your change will be recorded by MPAC, but it will need to be updated with the municipality separately.

Principles of the Municipal Elections Act

The secrecy and confidentiality of the individual votes is paramount;
The election should be fair and non-biased;
The election should be accessible to the voters;
The integrity of the process should be maintained throughout the election;
There be certainty that the election results reflect the votes cast;
Voters and candidates should be treated fairly & consistently;
The proper majority vote governs by ensuring the valid votes be counted, and
invalid votes be rejected so far as reasonably possible.

2026 Municipal Election Accessibility Plan

The City of Thunder Bay is committed ensuring that elections are accessible to everyone. Measures to ensure equal opportunity for all electors and candidates include the following objectives:

That persons with disabilities are able to independently cast their vote and verify their selection.
That persons with disabilities have full and equal access to all information on where and when to vote and on eligible candidates.
That persons with disabilities can fully participate in the municipal election as an elector, candidate, or election official.
That efforts are made to ensure that electors with disabilities are aware of the accessibility measures available via channels such as the City of Thunder Bay election website, social media and by contacting the municipal elections office.
That all polling locations and voter help centres are accessible.
That all election staff are trained in providing accessible customer service and that they recognize that a voter’s needs shall be accommodated.

2022 Candidate Financial Statements

After the end of the campaign period, candidates must file a financial statement and auditor’s report (if required) disclosing all contributions and expenses for their campaigns. The deadline to file financial statements was March 31, 2023 at 2 p.m.

As per the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 s.88.23(2), any candidate who does not file a financial statement by the March 31, 2023 deadline is in default and subject to the following penalties:
(a) the candidate forfeits any office to which he or she was elected and the office is deemed to be vacant; and
(b) until the next regular election has taken place, the candidate is ineligible to be elected or appointed to any office to which this Act applies.
