Summer Student Employment Program 2012

Learning Through Experience

Welcome to the City of Thunder Bay's 2012 Summer Student Employment Program. At the City of Thunder Bay, there are many opportunities available for students to gain valuable experience and skills.

Who is Eligible?
Students are eligible if they have been in full-time attendance (Sept. to April) at a school, college, university or other educational institution for the 2011-2012 academic year and will be returning to full-time studies for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Positions Available

Lottery Positions

The Corporation of the City of Thunder Bay annually hires students during the summer months through a job lottery. Students hired under this program will primarily work in general labourer, clerical/office - general, animal services, golf course, amusement ride/tour, tourism and storekeeper positions. The selection of students for these positions is based on a lottery system. Applications received for these positions will be entered into a database (pool of applicants) based on areas of interest specified by the applicant. When positions arise, applicants will be drawn by lottery from the database. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Specialized Positions

The Corporation has some summer positions that are specialized in nature, and require enrolment in a particular field of study. These vacancies will be posted and will not be part of our lottery process. To be considered for one of these positions, students must apply directly to a posted summer vacancy.

Click here for a list of all specialized summer student positions available.

Returning Students (Rehires)

Returning summer students who are eligible for re-hire (who worked for the City of Thunder Bay last summer), will be sent a Rehire Application Form by mail. Eligible re-hire students must complete and return their application to Human Resources by Feb. 29, 2012. These students will be contacted by Human Resources when departments identify their staffing needs.

Please Note:

The above program does not include summer positions within the Recreation & Culture Division.  Click here for more information and to download an application for summer positions within the City's Recreation & Culture Division.
