Reduced Load Restrictions To Be Lifted May 18

The City of Thunder Bay will be removing seasonal load restrictions on Monday, May 18 beginning at 7am.

This lifts roadway weight restrictions that were instituted on March 23 in conjunction with the Ministry of Transportation’s Provincial Reduced Load Regulations.

Heavy load restrictions are put into effect each spring to protect Thunder Bay’s road network from damage until frost is out of the ground.

City and Enbridge Gas Notify Public of Road Closure for Natural Gas Pipeline Maintenance

To support the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas in the community, the Algoma Street South and Waverley Street intersection will be closed for three weeks starting Tuesday, May 19, 2026, as Enbridge Gas performs scheduled work on a portion of its natural gas distribution system.

Watermain Work to Impact Memorial Avenue Traffic

Drivers should expect some traffic delays on Memorial Avenue in the Harbour Expressway area on Friday, May 15, as City crews perform watermain repair work.

 One of Memorial’s southbound lanes will be closed between the Harbour Expressway and Dunlop Street starting at 12am Friday morning. Reopening of the roadway is expected later on Friday.

 Drivers travelling southbound on Memorial should expect delays in the area, and are reminded to slow down and use caution around work sites.

Section of Junot Avenue to Close for Repaving

A section of Junot Avenue South will be closed to traffic on Friday, May 15 to allow for repaving work.

Beginning at 7am, Junot Avenue will be closed between Red River Road and Walkover Street. The road is anticipated to be reopened by 5pm.

The work includes partial-depth removal of existing asphalt and repaving one new lift of asphalt.  Please use alternative routes during this time.

Gravel Road Maintenance Underway Across Thunder Bay

With spring conditions improving, the City of Thunder Bay has begun seasonal maintenance on gravel roads across the community.

Residents may have seen recent updates on how the City is addressing pothole conditions on paved roads. Gravel roads also require significant spring maintenance, and City crews will be out over the next several weeks grading and repairing gravel surfaces as conditions allow.
