Tbaytel, in partnership with the City of Thunder Bay and Fort William First Nation has installed cameras in five local hockey rinks and arenas to provide spectators a way to watch their favourite athletes remotely from anywhere. Cameras will be live in Current River, Delany and Port Arthur Arena's from 7 a.m to 12 a.m daily.

Proof of Vaccine and Pre-Screening required to enter all City indoor Recreation Facilities. 

To protect workers and the public, as of September 22, 2021 the Province of Ontario government requires patrons entering certain public settings and facilities to provide proof of identification and of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19. These settings are outlined in O. Reg. 645/21, which is an amendment to O. Reg. 364/20: RULES FOR AREAS AT STEP 3 AND AT THE ROADMAP EXIT STEP. All City Recreation facilities will follow strict health and safety guidelines including, but not limited to: COVID-19 screening and vaccine verification, capacity limits, physical distancing, mask requirements where applicable, and cleaning and disinfecting practices.

City Arenas

Here is a summary of what to expect when using one of the City's arenas:

  • Pre-screening is required - fill out the online pre-screening tool to reduce line-ups
  • Proof of vaccination is required. Go to for full details
  • Players are to come dressed other than skates and helmets (no bags allowed inside)
  • Masks are required (may be removed when putting on helmet and/or actively participating in physical activity)
  • No access to dressing rooms
  • Please arrive and depart within 15 minutes of your ice rental


Outdoor skating rinks

The City maintains many outdoor skating rinks throughout the city. The rinks are weather dependent and are typically open from mid-December through mid-March. Ice conditions change with the weather and rinks may close without notice. Please note that outdoor skating is subject to change with COVID-19 developments.

Overview of arenas

The City of Thunder Bay typically has six municipal arenas available for rental: Fort William Gardens, Delaney Arena, Current River Arena, Grandview Arena, Neebing Arena and the Port Arthur Arena. Arena use is subject to change due to COVID-19 developments.

  • Ice Rental Season starts October 1 to April 15.
  • Building Rentals are also available during the off-season.
  • One Arena remains open throughout the summer months.

The Fort William Gardens

The Fort William Gardens is one of the six arenas operated by the City of Thunder Bay. It has the largest seating capacity in the district and is a complete multi-purpose facility capable of hosting a variety of events. It plays hosts to various local home teams including the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, Thunder Bay North Stars and Thunder Bay Skating Academy (formerly FWFSC).
