Looking for child care in Thunder Bay? The City of Thunder Bay operates four child care centres and licensed private home child care that provide safe, stimulating and nurturing environments.

Program statement

Our centres promote a balance of stimulation and relaxation that provides the basis for children's learning, development, health, and well-being.  Children must be valued as individuals that are competent, capable, curious, and rich in potential.  Our focus is on children first, and we aim to foster learning around belonging, engagement, expression and well-being.

Algoma Child Care Centre – 58 Algoma St. N.
Located near the corner of Red River Road and Algoma, close to the downtown North Core, Algoma Child Care Centre is a large facility with a great playground that doubles as a City Park. The Centre is conveniently located close to such amenities and attractions as Waverley Resource Library, Marina Park and Boulevard Lake.

Grace Remus Child Care Centre – 750 Tungsten St.
Situated in the Pioneer Ridge Long Term Care & Senior Services, this is a bright, new facility that is close to the College and the University, as well as the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Ogden Child Care Centre – 600 McKenzie St.
Ogden Child Care Centre is located downstairs in the Ogden Community School, offering a seamless day for children attending the Day Care and Ogden School.   The Centre also offers an after school program, Falcon Fun Zone through the Ontario “Best Start” program.
Woodcrest Child Care Centre – 867 Woodcrest Rd.
Located in Woodcrest School, Woodcrest Child Care Centre will offer a seamless day for children attending the child care program and school. Woodcrest will work with the school and the community to provide outstanding service to families.
Licensed Private Home Child Care – various locations
Private Home Child Care is a licensed and supervised program that is dedicated to providing both quality care and opportunities for children to grow at their individual rate. View the Information for Parents Handbook for details on licensed private home child care.

Quick facts on the centres

The following applies to Ogden, Algoma, Woodcrest and Grace Remus Child Care Centres:

  • Open Monday to Friday year round (closed statutory holidays, Remembrance Day, Easter Monday and between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
  • Flexible care: full time, ½ day, before and after school, lunch and drop in
  • Ages 18 months to 12 years old
  • Toddler, Preschool and Kindergarten, School Age programs
  • Well-equipped kitchen, a connected room layout, enclosed play area, accessible environments
  • Close ongoing relationships with various community resources that promote optimum child development such as Fairstart, literacy programs and speech therapy and special needs resources
  • Busing is available to Centres from a large number of schools
