The City of Thunder Bay’s Winter Operations Standards create safe, reliable and affordable snow and ice clearing across more than 1994 lane-km of roadways and 449 km of sidewalks. Contact us if you have concerns or questions regarding road clearing.

Plowing and sanding

After five centimetres of snowfall, our plows are out. We start snow plowing at 2 am on priority routes. This is to ensure that we keep emergency and transit routes open. They are often roads that have a lot of traffic. It takes about seven hours to clear these main routes. We also sand roads and sidewalks with sanding trucks and sidewalk plows that operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We collect road sand in the spring during street sweeping.

Residential streets and secondary routes

Our snow-removal crews move to residential streets and secondary routes after 10 centimetres of snow is on the ground and we have cleared the priority routes. Clearing all residential streets can take up to 72 hours to complete.

Parking restrictions

Winter parking restrictions apply to all streets within City boundaries. This is regardless of the current weather conditions. This lasts throughout winter until March 31 – unless lifted by the City earlier due to weather predictions.

What you can do to help

  • Be patient, as our crews are working hard to keep roads open and safe.
  • Be careful when following a plow or sander and give them extra room to manoeuvre.
  • Please stay back, as turning a plow in an intersection might require the driver to back up while turning.
  • Park off the street on your driveway or parking pad during snowfall events and be sure to follow winter parking restrictions.
  • Please do not push snow onto the roadway or across the street onto the boulevard.
