Reduced Load Restrictions Take Effect March 23

As part of the City of Thunder Bay’s efforts to maintain our roadways during the period of spring thaw, when road damage is most likely to occur, reduced heavy load restrictions will apply within the City of Thunder Bay limits beginning at 8:00 am on Monday, March 23.
The Reduced Load Restrictions apply to all streets within the City of Thunder Bay limits with some exempted streets. To view a reduced loads exemption restrictions map, visit thunderbay.ca/heavyloads.

Annual pothole repairs are underway as City crews address road damage caused by winter freeze–thaw cycles.
Potholes form when fluctuating temperatures allow water to seep into small cracks in the pavement. As temperatures drop, the water freezes and expands, then contracts as conditions warm. Over time, this repeated cycle weakens the asphalt. Traffic travelling over these weakened areas can cause the surface to break apart, creating potholes.

Snow Removal Operations to Begin Monday

Snow removal operations are scheduled to begin during night operations on Monday, March 2 at 12:00 a.m. midnight and will continue throughout the week.
Snow removal is undertaken only after significant accumulation has exceeded available storage within the road right-of-way and begins to impact traffic capacity. At that point, it is conducted to restore roadway capacity and reduce line-of-sight obstructions at intersections to improve safety for all road users.

Watermain Repair to Impact Memorial Avenue Traffic

February 24, 2026 – Drivers should expect some traffic delays on Memorial Avenue in the Harbour Expressway area on Wednesday, as City crews perform watermain repair work.
One of Memorial’s southbound lanes will be closed between the Harbour Expressway and Dunlop Street starting at 12:30am Wednesday morning. Reopening of the roadway is expected by Wednesday evening, but will depend on conditions.

With a winter storm warning in effect, the City of Thunder Bay is urging motorists to use extra caution as road crews work to keep local streets clear.
