Road Work Ahead: September 2024

The City of Thunder Bay is sharing details of construction projects expected to impact vehicular, cycling, and pedestrian travel in the month of September.

The City is investing $42 million in 2024 to fund crucial infrastructure work including road rehabilitation, sidewalk replacement, sewer and watermain repairs and replacements, and bridge and culvert renewal.

Work set to begin at Memorial Avenue & John Street intersection

Motorists should expect delays in the area of the Memorial Avenue and John Street intersection as work begins to renew the intersection.

Crews will be on site starting the evening of Wednesday, September 4 to set up traffic control measures for the work, which includes rebuilding the traffic signals, replacing underground infrastructure, and minor repairs to sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.

As work proceeds, travel lanes will be reduced at the intersection, and there will be rotating restrictions...

Valley Street water fill station temporarily closed

The Valley Street water fill station is out of service until further notice due to a technical issue.

The City of Thunder Bay is working to resolve the problem and will issue an update when more information is available on the station’s return to service.

The water fill station on Highway 61 at Mount Forest Boulevard remains available for residential use.

John Street to reopen Wednesday after watermain repair

John Street will reopen to traffic by end of day on Wednesday, August 28 after crews completed work on a watermain repair.

One portion of an eastbound lane on John Street, as well as the John Street entrance to the Shoppers Drug Mart parking lot, will remain closed temporarily while the road is prepared for full restoration.

Parking lot access remains available via Memorial Avenue and Queen Street.

A section of John Street will be closed on Wednesday, August 28 as crews continue to work on watermain repairs.

John Street will be closed in both directions between Secord Street and Algoma Street Wednesday morning. The City will provide an update when the roadway is ready to reopen.

Access to the sidewalk on the south side of John Street will be closed as the work proceeds. Access to the Shoppers Drug Mart parking lot remains available via Memorial Avenue and Queen Street.
