City of Thunder Bay Expands Downtown Revitalization Efforts to Cumberland Street

Reconstruction of a portion of Cumberland Street will begin next week and will require road closures for several weeks.

As part of the City’s latest downtown revitalization initiative, the project will introduce extended patio space, decorative concrete, and landscaping to the downtown core. The work will also include replacement of sanitary sewers and watermains. Local businesses will remain open throughout the construction, with pedestrian access always maintained.

Road Work Ahead: June 2026 Construction Projects

The City of Thunder Bay is sharing details of construction projects expected to impact vehicular, cycling, and pedestrian travel in the month of June.

The City is investing approximately $60 million in 2026 to maintain, improve, and expand Thunder Bay’s roads, bridges, sidewalks, trails, watermains, and other infrastructure that residents rely on every day.

Section of Central Avenue to Close on Wednesday

A section of Central Avenue will close to traffic on Wednesday, June 3 to allow for repaving work.

Central Avenue will be closed between Memorial Avenue and Fort William Road beginning at 6am, with reopening anticipated by 5pm. Please use alternative routes during this time.

The work includes partial-depth removal of existing asphalt and re-paving one new lift of asphalt.

Bike Lanes to Open for Season on May 23

Thunder Bay’s bike lanes will officially open for the season on Saturday, May 23, after a delay due to prolonged winter conditions. Bike lanes will remain operational until November 15, 2026, weather permitting.

During this period, on-street parking restrictions in designated bike lanes will be enforced. Please check local signage for details.
