Thanks to the media assistance, the urn that a subject of the media release put out earlier today has been returned to the rightful owner.
A family member heard the information about the urn on the radio and attended the Balmoral Police Station and positively identified the urn. The urn containing the remains of his wife had been misplaced in the summer. He had been searching for them without success until today.
This investigation is now complete.

The Thunder Bay Police Service is looking for the public to assist the to identify the owner of an Urn that was handed over to police.
A cardboard box with hand writing was labeled “Cindy’s Ashes” was found on July 20, 2011 by staff of Dutchak’s Recycle in a scrap pile. Inside the box was bubble wrap surrounding a cream coloured urn with a blue flower print and a gold handle. A bag containing cremation remains was inside the urn. The urn appears to have been possible homemade.
Investigation into the remains has not been able to confirm if they are human or animal. Examination of the urn has not provided any information as to the place of cremation. Based on information received by various professional in the funeral and veterinarian services, it is believed that they may be that of an animal.
The police are unsure if the remains were stolen, misplaced or rightfully discarded as they do not have any reports or leads that would allow them to return them to the rightful owner. All avenues of investigation have been exhausted and now the Thunder Bay Police are requesting the public to assist with this investigation.

A collision between an automobile and a pedestrian sent a female to hospital last evening.
At approximately 6:15 p.m. a south bound vehicle on Cumberland Street struck a pedestrian by the Marina Park entrance. Reports show that five people were waiting to cross the street when a 33 year old female ran into oncoming traffic.
The female was taken to Thunder Bay Regional Hospital with non life threatening injuries. The female appeared to have been intoxicated at the time of the incident. Her status in the hospital is unknown at this time.
No charges have been laid.

The fourth young male involved in the stabbing that occurred on January 6th in the Red River Road and Junot St. area is now in police custody.
Just after midnight on January 29th, a 15 year old male turn himself in to Police to be charged on outstanding warrants for 2 counts of Robbery and 3 Counts of Breach of Probation. He remains in police custody.

An auto pedestrian collision just before 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon at the entrance to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital sent a 25 year old female to hospital emergency department.
Three pedestrians were attempting to cross the street toward Lakehead University and stopped on the median. The driver of a pick up truck leaving the Hospital stopped half way through the intersection and motioned the pedestrians to continue to cross the street. Another eastbound vehicle evaded two of the pedestrians, but struck the 25 year old female, who was taken to Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Center with what later fortunately turned out to be minor injuries. No charges have been laid at this time, but the investigation continues.
Thunder Bay Police would like to remind the public that pedestrian movement upon a roadway is governed by both the Highway Traffic Act and City of Thunder Bay by-law. Pedestrians are only to proceed when it is safe to do so and only at an intersection. The prompting of other drivers or pedestrian does not always mean the path is clear and it is safe to proceed. The kind gestures of one person may have unforeseen consequences for another - always use caution.

Thunder Bay Police received a call last night that confirmed that an individual fell through the ice on the Kam River at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening. The individual was able to get out of the water and safely back on shore. The welfare of this individual has been confirmed by family members.

Police seize $132,000.00 in Marijuana and $51,000.00 in cash
On January 20, 2012 Thunder Bay Drug Enforcement Officers commenced an investigation involving a cache of illegal drugs.
Investigation continued and on January 23, 2012 James Allan MAKI 27 years of age a Thunder Bay resident was arrested while operating his 2004 pickup truck. In the vehicle were two boxes containing approximately 14.46 pounds of marijuana. The vehicle was also seized as offence related property.
A CDSA search warrant was later executed on MAKI’s residence. A 26 year old female resident was arrested. A result of the search resulted in approximately $3,400.00 in Canadian currency as well as approximately 95 grams in additional marijuana being seized. Street value of the drugs is approximately $131,360.00.
MAKI has been held in custody and has previous convictions for similar offences dating to 2006 and appeared in court January 24, 2012. He was released on a Recognizance with conditions and will appear in Thunder Bay court on February 14, 2012. MAKI has been charged with
• Trafficking Marijuana sec 5(1) CDSA
• Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking sec 5(2) CDSA
• Possession of Proceeds of Crime sec 354 (1)(a) CC
• Breach of Probation sec 733.1(1)(a) CC
A subsequent search resulted in the seizure of approximately $48,000.00 in Canadian currency. Investigation continues with the assistance of the provincial Asset Forfeiture Unit.
The female was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance sec 4(1) and later released on a Promise to Appear with a future court date of February 28, 2012.
The Combined Forces Organized Crime Unit consists of members from The Thunder Bay Police Service, The O.P.P.- Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, The R.C.M.P., The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service and The Anishinabek Police Service.

Just before 1:00 p.m. a 911 call was received reporting a hole in the Kam River at the public boat launch located at Mountdale Ave. and Montreal St.
Individuals went down to the boat launch area to have lunch and noticed the hole in the ice and immediately called 911. Emergency crews arrived on scene and observed tracks on the ice. Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue Service conducted an ice and water search of the area with negative results. Tracks were observed to have lead out to the hole and back form the hole.
Thunder Bay Police are requesting that if anyone was out on the ice or has knowledge of this incident that they contact the police to confirm their well being and conclude this incident.
Police are reminding the public that the extreme changes in the temperature over the past few weeks has made the ice conditions very unpredictable. It is recommended that caution is used and when in doubt to stay off the ice.

Thunder Bay Police are releasing images of the individual responsible for the Robbery on January 21, 2012 at the Mac’s Convenience Store located at 640 South Waterloo Street.
The suspect is described as a native Canadian male being 6’0” tall with a slim build with a dark complexion and short dark hair. He was wearing a black toque, a black jacket and a grey shirt and pants.

27 year old Ashley Marie Collins remains in custody after being arrested for the Robbery at Mets Variety on the evening of January 19, 2012.
Collins has been charged with Robbery and Breach of a Court Order for the incident. The arrest also leads to three unrelated charges of possession of stolen property and the execution of existing warrants for nine outstanding charges.

Police are investigating a robbery which occurred at 3:56 a.m. at the Mac’s Convenience Store located at 640 S Waterloo St. A lone male entered the store brandishing a large knife. The Male fled the scene with minimal merchandise. The Investigation is continuing.

Thunder Bay Police are currently investigating an assault which occurred on the 100 block of South Court Street on January, 20, 2012 at around 3:00 p.m.
Two native Canadian Males entered as apartment where a knife and hammer were produced. One male was struck several times in the head and a second male was assaulted and threatened with a knife.
One victim was transported to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center with head and facial injuries. He was treated and released. The second male was not injured.
Police have identified one of the accused male and have issued an arrest warrant for assault with a weapon. The second accused in still unidentified to date, investigation is continuing.

P12013302 – UPDATE - Robbery Arrest
A 27 year old female has been arrested by members of the Thunder Bay Police Criminal Investigation Unit for the robbery of a convenience store last night.
The female has been charged with Robbery, Possession of Stolen Property x3 and Breach of Recognizance.
Five warrants were also executed on the accused for nine outstanding changes ranging from property crime offences to breach of existing court orders.
The accused remains in police custody.

Police are still investigating the robbery that occurred last night at a south side convenience store.
Just before 8:30 p.m., the accused in this incident is alleged to have attempted to take money out of a cash register and the store owner slammed the cash register drawer on her fingers. The accused then attempted to grab a second cash register off the counter. A brief struggle between the owner and the accused resulted in the cash register being dropped and the accused being pushed out of the store.
The owner was able to keep the accused out of the store for a period of time before she pushed her way back in through the door and grab the cash register. The accused assaulted the owner as he attempted to prevent her from leaving the store with the register.
The accused left on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.
Police are looking for a native Canadian female approximately 5’11” tall with a thin build. She has straight brown shoulder length hair with a light brown complexion and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing jeans, a short grey jacket and running shoes.

At approximately 8:30 pm a female entered a south side convenience store and attempted to remove the cash drawer from a cash register.
The lone male owner attempted to stop the female and was assaulted. The female left on foot. The K9 Unit was called out but was unsuccessful. The owner was transported to the TBRHSC with some minor facial injuries and was released.
Undisclosed amount of cash was taken.
The female is described as native Canadian wearing jeans and a gray jacket.

The change in weather conditions have resulted in a high volume of motor vehicle collisions occurring over the past few hours.
The roads are currently frost covered and icy, with the frigid temperatures and wind, stopping can be an issue. Thunder Bay Police are urging motorists to adjust their driving to the road conditions.
Motorists are urged to
• slow down
• allow for sufficient distance between vehicles to be able to stop safely
• allow for more time to get to destination.

Thunder Bay Police are advising that the North Bound traffic lane on the James Street Swing bridge has been closed due to a motor vehicle collision. CN rail will be conducting the repairs, at this time it is unknown when the bridge will be reopened.

Thunder Bay Police are urging shoppers to keep an eye on their purses.
Three reports of wallets being taken from purses on Saturday afternoon have been reported to Police. In two of the incidents, wallets were taken while shoppers were in Chapters between noon and 1:00 p.m. In the third incident it is unknown where the wallet was taken from but the credit cards in the wallet were used to purchase item in three separate locations in the Intercity area. It is unknown at this time if the incidents are related.
Police remind shoppers to not leave purses unattended on a stroller or in a shopping basket. It is also suggested that purses are zipped closed to limit accessibility to the contents. Limiting the number of credit cards and other personal information in all wallets is strongly recommended to help minimize the reporting and replacing of identification should your wallet be lost or stolen and minimizing the risk of being a victim of identity theft.

The posting on tbtnewswatch of the video footage of the bomb threat phone call made to cause the evacuation of Bombardier on December 9, 2011 has proved beneficial in the investigation.
Thunder Bay Police received information from the public that has lead to the arrest of two sixteen year old males. Both youths have been charges with Uttering Threats to Destroy Property and have been released with a February 23, 2012 court date.
The investigation is ongoing.

Constable John Kusznier Remembered
Sunday January 15 is a day when we will remember the sacrifice made by Thunder Bay Police Constable John Kusznier.
Constable Kusznier was shot and killed while responding to a call in the city’s north end in the early morning hours of January 15, 1978. John Kusznier is the only member in the history of the Thunder Bay Police Service that was killed in the line of duty.
The Current River Bridge on Highway 11/17 was dedicated to the memory of Constable John Kusznier on May 1, 2010.

A trail was held on January 9th, 2012 in relation to the robbery of a 90 year old victim at the Casino that occurred in September 2011.
The youth charged with the offence pled guilty to a charge of theft and received 18 months probation, restitution and 18 months probation concurrent on his breach of probation

At approximately 6:50 p.m. a 19 year old male entered the Dairy Queen at 428 N Cumberland St. He brandished a knife demanding money. The clerk didn’t comply. The accused then attempted to take money out of the cash register. The cash drawer was slammed on the accused’s fingers. The accused left and was later apprehended further down on Cumberland St.
The accused has been charged with Robbery and Assault with a Weapon and will be attending bail court this morning.

The Criminal Investigation Branch of the Thunder Bay Police Service is releasing a video and images of persons of interest connected to the Bombardier Bomb Threat on December 9, 2011.
Investigation has resulted in the call believed to have been made from a payphone located on the corner of Vickers Street and Arthur Street. Video surveillance from the payphone shows two individuals using the phone at the time the call was received by Bombardier.

The Mr. Sub located at 209 Red River Road was a victim in a Break and Enter last night.
Thunder Bay Police were contacted at 4:45 a.m. by individuals who observed the front door of the store smashed. No one was located in the business when Police arrived.
Video surveillance shows the accused entering the store at approximately 2:26 a.m. and going behind the counter and taking a cash box that contained money.
The accused is described as being a male approximately 5’4” tall with a thin build. He was wearing a blue jacket with a hoodie underneath, light brown leather boots, gloves and his face was covered with a mask. The male had what appeared to be a crowbar in his hands.

Thunder Bay Police assisted an unconscious male found in a snow bank just before 5:00 am this morning.
A concerned citizen called police to report an unconscious male lying in snow bank on the corner of Limbrick Street and University Drive. The male eventually stated that he had been assaulted and an Ambulance attended to transport the male to Thunder Bay Regional Hospital for medical attention.
The victim was intoxicated and was not able to provide police with descriptors of the persons involved in this incident. A van was reported to have stopped by the male and then left the area before police arrived. No further descriptors of the van are available.
The victim will be released from the hospital today and the investigation continues.

Thunder Bay Police are currently trying to locate a sixteen year old native male who escaped custody from the Jack McGuire facility on Otway Road at approximately 3:00 pm today.
He is described as wearing a black sweater, two pairs of pants and having short cropped hair.
A second fifteen year old male escapee who fled the facility at the same time has already been captured by police and is being held in custody at 1200 Balmoral Street for video court tomorrow morning. Their names cannot be released because they are young offenders.

A commonly available application on Iphone assisted police this weekend in the arrest of three young persons.
The Iphone owner had his phone stolen from his vehicle at a Newcastle Drive location. He used the GPS function on his phone to track the location of the phone. This information was provided to police who were able to locate a stolen vehicle that was being used to assist in break and enter to residences on Theresa Street.
Three young persons were arrested and charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000. The accused were all also charged with possession of stolen property under $5000.00 for items taken in the break and enters. Breach of probation and possession of controlled substance changes have also been laid.
All three young persons have been remanded in court until tomorrow morning.

Thunder Bay Police are still actively looking for the fourth young male involved in the stabbing that occurred on January 6th, 2012 in the Red River Road and Junot St area.
The three accused already arrested appeared in court today to answer to charges of Robbery with violence and breach of probation. All three remain in custody.
The 24 year old victim remains in hospital and is listed in fair condition. The victims and accused were known to each other.

The Thunder Bay Police Service is currently investigating a robbery which occurred at the rear of Mac’s Mart at 915 Red River Road on January 6, 2012 at approximately 8:22 p.m. Three males were leaving the store after making a purchase and were confronted by 4 males at the rear of the property. One of the victims was assaulted by one of the accused males and the second victim was assaulted by 3 accused males and their purchases stolen.
A 15 year old victim received minor injuries while the second victim, a 24 year old male received numerous stab wounds in the back and arms. He is presently in stable condition at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center. The third male was not assaulted.
Criminal Investigations Branch has identified the 4 individuals responsible for the robbery and as of 7:30 p.m. today has arrested two of the individuals believed to be responsible for the robbery. Arrest warrants for the second 2 males are being requested and police are actively following up on known addresses for these two males. The ages of the four males are 15 to 18 years old.

A Police Services Act hearing will take place August 13, 14 & 15 2012 with continuance dates of September 5, 6, & 7 2012 regarding Inspector Dan TADDEO of the Thunder Bay Police Service. Inspector TADDEO is facing two counts of Misconduct under the Police Service Act.

A 19 year old male was robbed last night on the city south side.
Just before midnight the victim was walking home in the area of Edward Street and Frederica Street. As the victim walked past two males on the street they demanded money from him. The male stated that he had no money and was then knocked to the ground and assaulted. The accused took the victims backpack containing his work uniform and left in an unknown direction.
The victim was able to call for assistance from a near by residence and was taken to Thunder Bay Regional Hospital for medical attention and has since released.
Thunder Bay Police are looking for the individuals responsible for this robbery. They are both described as being Native Canadian in the mid teens to early 20 years of age. One male was wearing a black hood.

Holiday RIDE Program Results
A total of 5,500 vehicles were stopped in the 2011 Holiday RIDE Program by members of the Thunder Bay Police Service. 23 RIDE enforcement locations were set up over 19 dates in December 2011.
Here are the results:
14 persons were charged with Impaired Driving Offences
1 person was charged with Impaired by Drug
10 persons received 3 day license suspensions
12 Suspended Drivers were charged
160 Provincial Offences Tickets were issued
The public should be aware that the Thunder Bay Police Service conducts RIDE programs throughout the year. Do the right thing. Don’t drink and drive!
