Community Gathers in Reflection Ahead of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Over 100 people gathered tonight for “Together in Reflection” Sacred Fire Honouring National Day for Truth & Reconciliation, an event hosted by the City of Thunder Bay in partnership with the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre.

Teachings were shared by Knowledge Keeper Dave Simard and Fire Keeper Dean Nooshquash and songs by the Charging Thunder Singerz. Community members were also invited to share songs, stories, and words of reflection.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Every Child Matters Day or Orange Shirt Day, is recognized every year on September 30. It is a day to honour and remember the children taken from their families, those who never returned home, and the individuals, families and communities still living with the lasting impacts and trauma caused by the residential school system in Canada.

“National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an important time for our community to come together to honour Survivors, remember the children who never returned, and reflect on the ongoing impacts of the residential school system,” said Annika Gregg, Engagement & Partnerships Lead for the City of Thunder Bay.

“As we gather in reflection and remembrance, we must also recognize that reconciliation extends beyond a single day. It is an ongoing responsibility to listen, to learn, to build meaningful relationships, and to carry these commitments forward through our actions throughout the year.”

This gathering aligns with Action Item 20 of the City’s Smart Growth Action Plan, which focuses on integrating Indigenous perspectives, history, and lived experiences into public spaces and community learning. Honouring

Indigenous survivors and remembering those who did not survive colonial policies advances the City’s commitment to reconciliation as a foundation for long term, inclusive growth in Thunder Bay.
