Waste Collection Date Changes for Week of Canada Day 2026Next week’s Canada Day holiday will result in waste collection moving one day earlier in Areas 1 and 2.
If your usual collection day is Tuesday (Area 1 - blue calendar), next week’s waste collection moves to Monday, June 29.
Final Spring Leaf & Yard Waste Curbside Collection Begins Next WeekThe second and final Spring Leaf & Yard Waste curbside collection will take place between June 9 and 19, on residents’ regular recycling days.
This is a great opportunity to finish spring yard clean-ups and dispose of leaves, branches and woody brush.
Automated garbage cart usage begins week of June 1Beginning next week, the remaining Thunder Bay residential households will begin using automated carts for curbside garbage collection.
“We’ve been looking forward to this move to an automated, cart-based garbage collection system since it was included as an action item in the City’s long-term Solid Waste Management Strategy,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste & Recycling Services.
Free compost available to City residents beginning FridayFree compost will be available at the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility starting Friday, May 15, for all City residents - while quantities last, weather permitting.
Access to the compost pick-up area is located east of the old landfill entrance on John Street Rd.
Two Leaf & Yard Waste Curbside Collections this SpringThis spring there will be two Leaf & Yard Waste curbside collections. The first will take place between May 12 and 22, and the second four weeks later between June 9 and 19 - on residents’ regular recycling days.
Automated garbage cart delivery to begin for remaining city householdsBeginning May 4, delivery of pre-assembled 240-litre wheeled garbage carts will begin for remaining Thunder Bay residential households that did not receive a garbage cart in 2025’s soft launch. Delivery of carts will continue over several weeks.
Waste collection changes for week before Easter 2026Curbside waste collection dates will change next week due to the Good Friday statutory holiday, moving to one day earlier for all residents. There will be no collection on Friday, April 3.
