“HO HO HOLD the Waste” Upcycled Holiday Ornament ChallengeTo encourage waste reduction during the festive season, Thunder Bay Solid Waste & Recycling Services is pleased to announce its 2025 “Ho Ho Hold the Waste” Upcycled Ornament Challenge, inviting local residents to show their creative and sustainable ways of reducing waste during the holiday season.
Upcycling is the process of transforming waste or unwanted products into new items of higher value through creative reuse.
Final Fall Leaf & Yard Waste Curbside Collection coming soonThe second and final Fall Leaf & Yard Waste curbside collection is set to take place between Nov. 4 and 14, four weeks after the first Fall collection.

Automated garbage cart usage begins next week for 25% of City householdsBeginning next week, Thunder Bay residential households that received wheeled garbage carts in this year’s initial roll-out will begin using the carts for curbside garbage collection.
Approximately 25% of Thunder Bay residential households received garbage carts in this initial phase of the program.
Treasure Exchange Days coming September 20 & 21The City’s twice-yearly Treasure Exchange Days event will take place on Sept. 20 & 21, in conjunction with the City’s Neighbour Day on Sept.
Automated garbage cart delivery begins to 25% of City householdsBeginning today, pre-assembled wheeled garbage carts will start being delivered to selected neighbourhoods representing approximately 25% of the City’s residential households. Delivery of carts will continue over several weeks.
Free Landfill Tipping Fee Voucher supports tree clean-up re July 1 stormIn response to the significant damage caused by the July 1 storm event, the City is offering vouchers for one free tipping fee at the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility (Landfill) available for yard waste only, for affected households.
“We understand that the clean-up may take several weeks and that it involves a large volume of trees, limbs and branches,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste & Recycling Services.
Final Spring Leaf & Yard Waste Curbside Collection comingThe second and final Spring Leaf & Yard waste curbside collection will take place between June 10 and June 20, on residents’ regular recycling day.
“Having two collections in the spring and two again in the fall allows the City to increase the amount of leaf and yard waste collected and diverted from the landfill,” said Jason Sherband, Manager of Solid Waste & Recycling Services.
