Community Safety Response Teams

The City of Thunder Bay will be launching a coordinated community safety response that will see teams respond quickly to non-emergency calls with a focus on the North and South Core downtown areas, as well as along Transit routes. Any immediate threats or emergencies should always be directed to 911. 

The community safety response teams are trained in de-escalation, trauma-informed care, and making effective connections to support services.

The Mobile Safety and Security Response Program (SSR Team) will see Municipal Law Enforcement Officer teams, trained in de-escalation, quickly attend calls at transit terminals, stops, and along bus routes, including taking part in regular ride-alongs during the day and night. The SSR Team will also respond to calls on public property and at municipal facilities.

The Superior North Specialized Treatment and Alternative Response, or STAR team, aims to lessen the pressure on first responders and emergency rooms by providing on-scene interventions and supporting individuals experiencing mental health and addictions-related crises.

The Neighbourhood Navigators will act as community connectors and support the Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) by being a proactive and welcome presence in the community.

The Encampment Response Team responds to encampment and encampment-related calls and provides emergency response coordination, as well as the linking people to community support services. 

All teams will provide a consistent presence in the community and contribute to a safer city.
