Ho Ho Ho-ld the Waste Holiday Waste Reduction Contest launches
To encourage waste reduction practices during the festive season, Thunder Bay Solid Waste & Recycling Services is thrilled to launch the Ho Ho Ho-ld the Waste Holiday Waste Reduction Contest. The contest invites local residents to demonstrate their commitment to reducing the waste they produce during the holidays through creative and sustainable solutions.
Leaf and Yard Waste collection to begin next weekFall curbside collection of organic leaf and yard waste will begin next week. Collection will take place between October 24 and November 3, on your regular recycling days.
Residents Invited to Public Works Open HouseResidents are invited to a free open house that will highlight the important work that our public works professionals do every day to keep the city running.
The public works open house will take place on Saturday, September 23, from 11 am – 2 pm at the Mountdale Public Works Yard, 410 Mountdale Ave.
Treasure Exchange Days Returns September 9 & 10This City’s Treasure Exchange Days event returns this month. The popular event aimed at diverting waste from the landfill and giving a second life to good-condition items that are no longer needed is a great opportunity to exchange reusable household items, furniture, small appliances, toys, and more for free.
Free compost available to residentsCompost is available to all residents at no charge at the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility while quantities last, weather permitting, beginning today.
“We’re happy to again offer free compost to all residents,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste & Recycling Services.
Waste Collection Changes for Week Before Easter 2023Curbside waste collection dates will change this week due to Good Friday.
Garbage and recycling collection will move one day earlier for all residents.
Landfill closed on Family DayAs a result of the upcoming Family Day public holiday, the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility (the Landfill) as well as the Front Street and Mountdale Avenue recycling depots will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20.
Extra Item of Garbage Allowed After New Year’s Day 2023Due to the increase of waste during the holiday season, the City will allow households a third item of garbage at the curb, without a tag, on the first collection date after New Year’s Day.
Wrapping paper cannot be recycled because of its high ink content and must be thrown away.
Christmas Tree Drop-Off Sites Open Boxing Day 2022Each year, the City of Thunder Bay offers a Christmas tree chipping program from Boxing Day to January 12.
Fresh-cut Christmas trees can be dropped off at several locations across the city, where they will be collected, chipped and added to the compost pile at the City's landfill.
