Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds residents that all outdoor burning permits inclusive of Open (brush) and Recreational (fire pit) in the City of Thunder Bay must be approved as per the Ontario Fire Code.

Unapproved burning due to not having a permit or breaking the terms and conditions of the fire permit will result in a Cease to Burn Order and a minimum fine of $583.

Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 3-9 this year, promotes the theme “Prepared Together,” highlighting the different types of emergencies that individuals can prepare for.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds residents that it is the law to have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon Monoxide alarms are required to be installed outside any sleeping area if your home has a fuel-fired appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.

An owner of a multi-unit residential building on Walsh Street East has been issued tickets for failing to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as required. The tickets resulted from an investigation after a fire occurred in one of the residential units in November.

Shortly before midnight, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to reports of a fire at an encampment near Simpson St. The callers reported that tents were ablaze and that propane cylinders were exploding at the scene.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue welcomed eight new firefighters into its ranks at a graduation ceremony over the weekend.

During a ceremony held at the Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Training Centre on Friday, with their family members present, the graduates were personally congratulated by Fire Chief Dave Paxton, General Manager of Development, Infrastructure and Operations Kerri Marshall, City Manager John Collin, Mayor Ken Boshcoff and local MPs and MPPs.
