The City of Thunder Bay has requested immediate assistance from the Province for additional funding, support for staffing and social services for individuals experiencing homelessness and precariously housed in Thunder Bay.

To support the City’s request for assistance, the Mayor is declaring a state of emergency specific to health and social services in relation to COVID-19 as it pertains to isolation supports required for vulnerable populations, such as people who are homeless or use the community’s.

Starting on Dec. 17, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue will extend the outdoor burning hours from 12 pm to 12am daily until May 1, 2021.

Firefighter Stephanie Drost has been newly named to the Canadian Bobsleigh Team on track to the Beijing 2022 Olympics. She is one of the Brakemen for team Canada which has five pilots and eight brakemen in the system.

Greg Hankkio has been appointed Fire Chief for the City of Thunder Bay.

Chief Hankkio started his career as a firefighter with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue in 1991.

An investigation by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue has concluded that the structural fire that occurred at 330 Lillie St. North on June 2, 2020, was the result of careless disposal of smoking material.

At midnight tonight, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue will lift the City wide fire ban previously in place. 

At that time, all valid outdoor burning permits will be reinstated.

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent social distancing policies, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue would like to communicate to the public the adjustments in which we will be operating.

Effective at midnight tonight, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue has issued a fire ban on all outdoor burning within the City of Thunder Bay.  The ban on outdoor burning is consistent with the recent Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests Restricted Fire Zone declaration.

The City of Thunder Bay has received an Interest Arbitration Award for the Thunder Bay Professional Fire Fighters Association.

This award is determined by a provincially-appointed arbitrator, and is mandatory.
