The City of Thunder Bay is advising the community that construction activity at 879 Alloy Place – the site for the Temporary Village – will resume beginning Monday March 9, 2026, as work continues with site preparation and infrastructure.

Initial activities will focus on site grading and drainage, including excavation and the placement of granular material and geotextiles.

Following City Council’s decision on July 21 to confirm 879 Alloy Place (Hillyard Site) as the location for the Temporary Shelter Village, City staff hosted an information session this morning for nearby business owners and operators.

Held at Moose Hall in partnership with the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce, about 55 people attended to ask questions, and learn more about the project and opportunities for ongoing engagement as the project moves forward.

After nearly two years of extensive research, public input, and in-depth review, the City is recommending 114 Miles Street East as the site for the Temporary Shelter Village.

This decision follows a comprehensive process that began in 2022 when City Council endorsed a human rights-based approach to encampments.

City Council has approved Kam River Heritage Park as the location for the City’s new Temporary Shelter Village. This decision is subject to final approval at the May 5th City Council meeting.

Following extensive analysis, engagement, and a commitment to community safety and wellbeing, the City has identified 1111 Fort William Road, a parcel of land owned by the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA), as the recommended site for the Temporary Shelter Village Initiative. This recommendation comes after careful consideration of over 50 alternative locations across the city.

Students from Confederation College's post-graduate Health Informatics program showcased their capstone research projects today, sharing health indicator findings that will inform the City of Thunder Bay’s next Community Safety and Well-Being Plan. 

The Health Informatics students collected data on health indicators related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) and, in small groups, validated and updated that data from a 2022 Thunder Bay Voluntary Local Review (VLR) of the SDGs.
