Reconstruction of a portion of Cumberland Street will begin next week and will require road closures for several weeks.

As part of the City’s latest downtown revitalization initiative, the project will introduce extended patio space, decorative concrete, and landscaping to the downtown core.

The City of Thunder Bay is sharing details of construction projects expected to impact vehicular, cycling, and pedestrian travel in the month of June.

The City is investing approximately $60 million in 2026 to maintain, improve, and expand Thunder Bay’s roads, bridges, sidewalks, trails, watermains, and other infrastructure that residents rely on every day.

A section of Central Avenue will close to traffic on Wednesday, June 3 to allow for repaving work.

Central Avenue will be closed between Memorial Avenue and Fort William Road beginning at 6am, with reopening anticipated by 5pm.

Thunder Bay’s bike lanes will officially open for the season on Saturday, May 23, after a delay due to prolonged winter conditions. Bike lanes will remain operational until November 15, 2026, weather permitting.

The City of Thunder Bay will be removing seasonal load restrictions on Monday, May 18 beginning at 7am.

This lifts roadway weight restrictions that were instituted on March 23 in conjunction with the Ministry of Transportation’s Provincial Reduced Load Regulations.

To support the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas in the community, the Algoma Street South and Waverley Street intersection will be closed for three weeks starting Tuesday, May 19, 2026, as Enbridge Gas performs scheduled work on a portion of its natural gas distribution system.

All northbound and southbound lanes of Algoma Street South, between Park Avenue in the south and Red River Road in the north will be closed, as well as all eastbound and westbound lanes of Waverley Street between.

Drivers should expect some traffic delays on Memorial Avenue in the Harbour Expressway area on Friday, May 15, as City crews perform watermain repair work.

 One of Memorial’s southbound lanes will be closed between the Harbour Expressway and Dunlop Street starting at 12am Friday morning.
