Due to COVID-19 restrictions limiting public events, Indigenous Relations and Inclusion, City of Thunder Bay, along with co-hosts Thunder Bay Public Library, Red Sky Performance and National Film Board of Canada, teamed up to provide virtual programming from June 19 to June 25.

WHEREAS, the goal of the day is for neighbours to connect and celebrate the heart and sprit of their neighbourhoods and our community; and

WHEREAS, neighbours can show appreciation for each other and perform random acts of neighbouring during this day; and

WHEREAS, neighbourhoods can personalize their celebration by decorating their neighbourhood in a specific theme, displaying art..

Thunder Bay City Council has declared the third Saturday in June to be Neighbour Day each year. Thunder Bay’s first Neighbour Day is set for Saturday, June 20.

A report recommending ways that the City can help restaurants and retailers set up outdoor patios or displays was approved by City Council last night, including waiving permit fees and specific zoning enforcement, and expediting the process for owners. 

“By finding innovative ways to allow access to City property and private parking areas and by streamlining the process, we are helping more local restaurants take advantage of patio season,” said Mayor Bill Mauro.

As the Province enters Stage 2 of its reopening plan, the City wants to remind building owners and operators to maintain water safety when reopening. While the City is responsible to provide clean, safe drinking water to each building, it is the responsibility of each building owner to ensure it maintains the safety of the water within their building.

The Municipal Emergency Control Group (MECG) met today with various community partners as Thunder Bay starts to gradually reopen.

Officials remind residents to maintain precautions against the spread of COVID-19 including regular hand washing, keeping a distance of two metres from others, and wearing a cloth mask when physical distancing is not possible such as when shopping or on a bus.

The City of Thunder Bay welcomes the announcement from the Province that the Thunder Bay District can proceed with the next phase of reopening plans.

With the Province’s announcement yesterday, the City is continuing work on planning for certain summer facilities, programs and services in July and August, including some day camps and neighbourhood programs, Sandy Beach operations and patios at the City-operated Golf Courses.

The City of Thunder Bay is investing $18 million in 2020, on road and sidewalk rehabilitation, residential paving, sanitary and storm sewers, watermain repair/replacement, bridge and culvert work, and streetlight renewal.

Road work can result in road closures, detours and delays for drivers.
