On the afternoon of Monday, April 15, in response to a 911 call, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a structural fire at a residence in the 200 block of Banning Street.

Soon after leaving the fire station, the responding District-Chief observed heavy black smoke in the area, and called for a second alarm.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to multiple structural fires last week and after investigating, determined that two were caused by candles.

“We’re very concerned about the latest string of fires caused by candles,” said Fire Chief John Hay.

The City of Thunder Bay is among communities that have been asked by the Province to host residents of Kashechewan First Nation due to potential for flooding.

“Thunder Bay has a long history of stepping forward as a host community, supported by full funding from the federal government,” said Mayor Bill Mauro.

Moving forward on plans for a multi-use indoor turf facility for Thunder Bay, Mayor Bill Mauro met with operators of two similar facilities in Winnipeg this week to learn more about how such a facility could meet the needs of our community.

“Given Council’s direction which identifies a multi-use indoor turf facility as a priority project, it made sense to look at what’s being done elsewhere in terms of functionality and operating requirements in order to assess what might be possible here,” said Mayor.
