  • Sections of Simpson Street to Close for Repaving Work

    July 2, 2026 – Sections of Simpson Street will be closed to traffic starting today, Thursday, July 2, to allow for the completion of repaving work.

    Closures will be in place along Simpson between Robertson Street and Victoria Avenue for several days.

  • Harbour Expressway Turn Lane to Close July 2

    July 2, 2026 – The eastbound left turn lane at the Harbour Expressway and Golf Links Road intersection will be closed to traffic today, Thursday, July 2, to allow for roadway improvements.

    This work supports construction of an additional left-turn lane on the Harbour Expressway, helping to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and make better use of the existing road capacity along one of Thunder Bay’s key growth corridors.

  • City Hosts Gathering in Honour of Indigenous Survivors Day

    The City of Thunder Bay hosted a community gathering today at the Baggage Building Arts Centre to honour Indigenous Survivors Day, celebrating strength, resilience, and culture.

    Created by Sixties Scoop survivor Troy Abromaitis, a member of the Nlaka’pamux Nation from Lytton First Nation in British Columbia, Indigenous Survivors Day recognizes the cultural contributions of Indigenous survivors of residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, and other colonial policies.

  • City of Thunder Bay Supporting Evacuation Efforts for Kasabonika Lake First Nation

    June 29, 2025 – The City of Thunder Bay is supporting emergency evacuation efforts for Kasabonika Lake First Nation due to active wildfires in the region that are impacting air quality, visibility, and community safety.

    At the request of emergency management partners, the Thunder Bay International Airport is serving as a hub for evacuation operations, facilitating the movement of approximately 450 community members to Toronto.

  • East End & Balmoral Detour

    Beginning Monday, June 29, 2026, Routes 12 East End and 16 Balmoral will operate on detour due to the City's Pacific Avenue bridge construction project. The detour is expected to remain in effect through late Fall 2026.

    Route Changes

    Route 16 Balmoral

    • Regular service will continue between City Hall and Confederation College.
    • On return trips, buses will transition into the East End route at Balmoral Avenue & Dease Street rather than returning directly to City Hall.

    Route 12 East End

    • Buses will operate on a revised route using Main Street and Fort William Road to access the East End.
    • Customers may experience slightly longer travel times during construction.

    Temporary Stop Relocation

    The stop at McPherson St. & Connolly St. has been temporarily relocated to Pacific Avenue, just before the McPherson Street intersection beside the church.

    Additional temporary stops have also been added along Fort William Road to help maintain service during the detour.

    Victoria & Archibald Intersection to Close

    The intersection of Victoria Avenue East and Archibald Street North will be closed starting on Monday, June 29 to allow for underground infrastructure work and resurfacing.

    Pedestrian access will remain available during the closure of the intersection.

    East End and Balmoral Transit Routes to Detour Beginning June 29

    Beginning Monday, June 29, Thunder Bay Transit will implement a long-term detour affecting Route 12 East End and Route 16 Balmoral due to the City's Pacific Avenue Bridge construction project. The detour is expected to remain in place through late Fall 2026 and be reintroduced again during the 2027 construction season.

    Lanes to be Reduced on Arthur Street for Line Painting

    Lane reductions will be in place on Arthur Street West between Highway 61 and Parkdale Boulevard starting on Friday, June 26 to allow for line painting.

    At least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction during the work, which is expected to take approximately two days to complete, depending on weather conditions.
