National Public Works Week increases awareness across North America of the importance of public works, and recognizes the professionals working behind the scenes.
Public works staff keep towns and cities running smoothly and safely with well-maintained roads, reliable transit, state-of-the-art water treatment and recycling facilities, fire rescue services, and more.

Some of this work, like maintaining roads and bridges, is easy to see. Other efforts, such as keeping our water and sewer systems running smoothly, often happen behind the scenes. Every task, whether visible or not, plays an essential role. Together, they are the backbone of healthy, vibrant communities and remind us that every project supports the connection between service and residents.
Celebrating Public Works Week in Thunder Bay
The City of Thunder Bay celebrates National Public Works Week yearly with staff recognition events and public awareness media campaigns featuring public works staff and projects. Every two years, Public Works staff present a Public Works Open House for the public to enjoy, outdoors at Mountdale Yard. The next Open House is scheduled for 2027.
