October 11, 2016 - The City's Parks & Open Spaces Section has officially opened a new adult outdoor exercise equipment area at the south end of Minnesota Park, located between Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Avenue on the city's south side.
The equipment is designed to incorporate the four elements of a well-rounded fitness program to improve muscle fitness, balance/ flexibility, core fitness and aerobic fitness. It includes 13 different stations including chin-up bars, sit-up/back-up, leg & chest press and an upright cycle. Several of the components are accessible.
The equipment is situated adjacent to Minnesota Park's existing children's play equipment and the supervised Art Widnall Public Pool, providing recreation for the whole family. The pleasant, treed area has been enhanced by the removal and relocation of fences, and in the future will incorporate seating into the area's perimeter.
City Councillor-at-Large Rebecca Johnson, Evergreen - A United Neighbourhood's Executive Director Linda Bruins, and several of the City's Park & Open Spaces staff were on hand today to officially open the area.
"We look forward to seeing residents using the new equipment and enjoying the family space we've created here," said Werner Schwar, the City's Supervisor of Parks & Open Space Planning. "Area seniors have also told us they will make the park a destination."
The Parks & Open Spaces Section's ultimate goal with this new equipment and enhancements to the park is to encourage neighbourhood residents to get out and enjoy the park and improve their physical and mental well-being.
