Beginning May 4, delivery of pre-assembled 240-litre wheeled garbage carts will begin for remaining Thunder Bay residential households that did not receive a garbage cart in 2025’s soft launch. Delivery of carts will continue over several weeks.
Residents are asked to store their garbage cart beside or behind their house or in their garage.
“We’re excited to be embarking on the final implementation of the automated garbage cart system for the rest of the city,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste & Recycling Services. “Many residents have been looking forward to this. A cart-based garbage collection system is an action item of the City’s long-term Solid Waste Management Strategy.”
Automated garbage cart collection service for all residential households begins the week of June 1. Residents must not use the cart for garbage collection before that time. After June 1, garbage set out in cans or in garbage bags will no longer be collected. An information sheet with instructions for cart usage will be attached to each delivered cart and can be peeled off for easy reference by residents.
