Beginning next week, the remaining Thunder Bay residential households will begin using automated carts for curbside garbage collection.

“We’ve been looking forward to this move to an automated, cart-based garbage collection system since it was included as an action item in the City’s long-term Solid Waste Management Strategy,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste & Recycling Services. “This change represents a transformation of the City’s waste management system, and how we collect garbage from the curb. We’re celebrating the change.”

New garbage trucks, replacing retiring fleet vehicles, have been fitted with mechanical arms that grasp and tip the carts into the truck’s hopper.

After June 1, garbage set out in cans or in garbage bags will no longer be collected. An information sheet with instructions for cart usage can be found attached to each delivered cart and should be peeled off by residents for easy reference.

Residents are reminded to have garbage out by 7 am on their collection day, as schedules are always subject to change.

The City recommends repurposing old garbage cans for storage, rain barrels or other purposes. Alternatively, residents who wish to dispose of their old garbage cans free of charge may drop them off from Saturday, June 6 to Saturday, July 4 at the signed area in the Administration Building parking lot at the Thunder Bay Solid Waste & Recycling Facility – last left turn before the scales.
