Thunder Bay’s bike lanes will officially open for the season on Saturday, May 23, after a delay due to prolonged winter conditions. Bike lanes will remain operational until November 15, 2026, weather permitting.

During this period, on-street parking restrictions in designated bike lanes will be enforced. Please check local signage for details.

The opening of bike lanes follows the completion of street sweeping along priority bike routes. Street sweeping operations will continue in other areas of the city.

With the warmer weather and rising fuel prices, drivers may see increased bicycle traffic. Motorists are asked to be aware of people riding their bikes, respect bike lanes, and share the road by watching at intersections, giving space, and slowing down near bike riders.

Cyclists are reminded that bicycles with a wheel diameter greater than 43 centimetres are not allowed on sidewalks, and should use the right-hand side of the roadway in areas where cycling infrastructure is not present.

Thunder Bay boasts a large network of on-road cycling facilities and multi-use trails, as part of the city’s Active Transportation Network. Choosing active methods of transportation is a great way to improve personal fitness and wellness, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and cut household transportation costs while building a healthy, vibrant, and equitable community.
