To support the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas in the community, the Algoma Street South and Waverley Street intersection will be closed for three weeks starting Tuesday, May 19, 2026, as Enbridge Gas performs scheduled work on a portion of its natural gas distribution system.

All northbound and southbound lanes of Algoma Street South, between Park Avenue in the south and Red River Road in the north will be closed, as well as all eastbound and westbound lanes of Waverley Street between Secord Street in the east and Red River Road in the west.

Road closures will be in place from Tuesday, May 19 to Sunday, June 7, with crews on site between 7:00 am to 11:00 pm, including weekends. Work hours and timelines may be adjusted due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

This work will occur in the City’s right‑of‑way, and all affected areas will be restored once construction is complete.

“This work is part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring a safe and reliable natural gas system for the Thunder Bay community,” said Michelle Samms, Operations Manager with Enbridge Gas. “We recognize this project will cause temporary disruption, and our crews are working closely with the City of Thunder Bay to complete the work as efficiently as possible while maintaining safety for residents, businesses and emergency services throughout construction.”

“Enbridge Gas provides critical services to city residents and businesses, and the City is supportive of their proactive infrastructure maintenance.” said Matthew Miedema, Director – Engineering, City of Thunder Bay. “We appreciate the public’s patience during this temporary closure and encourage drivers and pedestrians to plan ahead, follow posted detour signage, and allow extra travel time while this work is underway.”

Measures to minimize disruption for motorists and pedestrians

  • Residents and businesses in the area may experience traffic detours, temporary sidewalk closures and construction‑related noise during this work.
  • Construction notification and traffic detour signage will be posted.
  • Local access to properties adjacent to the construction zone will be maintained for vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Emergency service access will be maintained.

Natural gas contains an odourant that makes it smell like rotten eggs, or sulphur, even in very small concentrations. If you smell natural gas, go outside or leave the area immediately and call the 24-hour Enbridge Gas emergency number at 1-866-763-5427, or 911, from a safe distance.
